Fleas are some of the hardest creatures to get rid of. They multiply quickly if not treated properly. We love our pets and want to keep them, but we could live without the fleas. If you only have fleas on your pet, you can solve the problem with dish detergent before they take over your home. If the fleas have already invaded and taken up your home, you may need more help than dish detergent. I would suggest a spray made to kill them & their larvae purchased at a hardware store. I’ve had to use it and it’s pricey, but works in only a couple of treatments. It’s simple and non-hazardous. If the fleas are only on your pet & occasionally you, this will do the trick!

For dogs and other pets that can be bathed: you will need to have Dawn dish detergent. I recommend using Dawn because it works best for killing the fleas where other brands may not.

Next the only thing you need to do is prepare the warm (not hot!) bath. Just run water, then put them in the tub. You can also use an outdoor water supply such as a hose, if needed.

Use a removable shower head, cup, or a water hose to fully wet your pet with water being cautious not to get in the eyes as it may irritate.

When the pet is completely wet, lather with plenty of the Dawn dish detergent. You should spend a few minutes scrubbing, more depending on the severity of the fleas. Scrub gently, but well enough to get deep into the fur where fleas hide. Having a pet brush on hand is helpful for penetrating the hair.

You will see fleas begin to fall off into the tub, you should rinse regularly to get rid of dead fleas and get to the live ones. Rinse and repeat just as you would if you were washing oil out from your own hair.

Continue the scrub and rinse process until you see no fleas in the tub. This can take a few minutes.

Keep in mind that fleas will run to the head and face to hide. Just add a tiny drop of detergent and rinse to get rid of those. You can pick them off the face as you see them so you don’t get soap and water in the eyes, if you prefer.

For pets such as cats, that you can’t bathe, use a bowl and mix 2-3 teaspoons of detergent and fill the rest half way with water. Mix well until it’s bubbly.

Use a “flea comb,” for non-bathing pets. You can purchase them at wal mart for a dollar in the pet supplies section. Flea combs are tiny combs used to brush the hair to catch fleas in the bristles.

Brush the entire coat working in sections with your comb, then dip the comb with fleas in the bowl of water and detergent. This kills them instantaneously. It may take a while, but it’s worth the while.

Brush until you see no more fleas.
