Gone With the Wind was first published in 1936 and is the only novel by Margaret Mitchell. The story takes place in Georgia and Atlanta during the American Civil War and follows the lives of young Scarlett O’Hara, the daughter of an immigrant Irish plantation owner. Although in love with Ashely Wilkes, Scarlett marries two men, but none of love: first with Charles, who died in war, and the second time with Frank, her sister’s boyfriend, whom he married to save the Tara plantation. In all this time thinking about Ashley Wilkes, who married but with Melanie Hamilton. Even if married, Scarlett spends time with Rhett Butler, an outrageous adventure yet elegant. After her second husband dies, Scarlett marries Rhett, who is aware of her passion for Ashley, but hope one day you will love it. Finally, Scarlett realizes that he really loves Rhett, but even after the couple has gone through many trials together, no longer loves Rhett.

The book includes a vivid description of the decay of Atlanta, in 1864 and the devastation of a war that has left behind. The novel is based on considerable historical research. According to her biography, Margaret Mitchell was ten years old when he learned that the South lost the war. Comprehensive narrative about the war has helped the book win the Pulitzer Prize in 1937.
