The book the Great Expectations review.
Miss Havisham and Magwitch are very much alike if you think about it. They are parents and patrons. They are also seekers of revenge. They may not have grown up the same; Magwitch growing up as a convict, ostracized from society, and Miss Havisham growing up a good life in a nice home, etc. Aside from that, if you look deeper, they can be similar in some areas.
Both Miss Havisham and Magwitch are patrons. They both help people in their own sort of way. Miss Havisham adopted Estella, Magwitch’s long, lost (so he thinks) daughter. Miss Havisham raised Estella for Molly, Estella’s mother, because Molly couldn’t raise her. Magwitch was the person that gave Pip his fortune. That obviously helped Pip and I think Magwitch really is a good person. Therefore, Magwitch and Miss Havisham both have helped people a lot through this book.
They both have people in their life that they would like to seek revenge on. Magwitch would love to seek revenge on Compeyson, his old friend that turned on him and tried to kill him. I think anybody would like to seek revenge on someone who tries to kill you. Miss Havisham was left at the altar on her wedding day and was heartbroken, so she definitely would like to seek revenge on her ex-fiancé. Both Miss Havisham and Magwitch have revenge in common also.
And lastly, Miss Havisham and Magwitch are both parents. Not only are they parents, but they have Estella in common. Magwitch is Estella’s father, but Molly couldn’t raise her so Miss Havisham adopted Estella for her. Right before Magwitch dies he finds out that Estella is alive, well, and being taken care of by Miss Havisham. Both characters have this in common as well.
So, as you see, Miss Havisham and Magwitch are very similar in more ways than you would think. At first, you would think that they are nothing alike because Magwitch is a convict on the run and Miss Havisham is rich and lives in a nice house. This just proves even further that the old saying “There’s more to it than meets the eye” is correct.
