Olive Oyl may not be green, but her boyfriend Popeye’s spinach was. 

Collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, polk salad and broccoli are all green from nature’s garden.  Parsley, chives and lettuce of many varieties all add great healthy items to our diet.  Peas and green beans are wonderful southern delicacies.  You cannot beat green beans cooked to death with fatback.  Celery adds spice and a crunchy consistency to many foods.

Green is prevalent in nature in evergreen trees and all kinds and varieties of grass.  Army green is a reference to a particular shade of green.  Frogs are our green friends of the animal world.  Some snakes and lizards feature shades of green.  Green is prevalent among fish.  Green parakeets are beautiful in all their finery.

Green with envy is a particular saying.  Jealousy may conger up shades of green.  Sickness from the sea may make your face appear green.  St. Patrick’s Day celebrate our green Irish traditions along with our friends the leprechauns.  Christmas trees are evergreens and symbolize the celebration.  There is nothing more unpleasant than the green mess in a baby’s diaper.  Or the sickness on the floor after it comes back up.

Green olives adorn many dishes.  Guacamole dip is delicious.  Green gelatin is wonderful.   Green beer and green cookies abound each year on March 17.  Nothing is prettier than the early greens of a blooming Spring season.  Green candy and lime flavored deserts are reminders of what great things green can mean.    A green screen refers to a blank backdrop used in films.  You stand in front of it and it is populated with a film when played back.  So next time you are green with envy or jealousy, remember there are many other more complimentary shades of green to be.  Me, I have green cat eyes.
