On March 2, 2005, Danny was born. He passed away from SUDEP in mid December of this last year. On his birthday, just under 7000 on "The Danny Did Foundation" Facebook page celebrated his life. We join his family on their mission to protect others from losing their child the same way. And in this little boy’s name, we push ourselves to find something GOOD here in the empty space of loss that we feel for those who loved Danny most of all.

Happy, Happy Birthday, Danny. I didn’t know you when you were here, but I know you now. So do about 7000 people on your Facebook Page, The Danny Did Foundation. Yeah, Danny, that’s a lot of people. And, it happend in less than 2 months.

Your family is missing you, little guy. They’re trying to celebrate your life, but without you here, it feels hard to do that. Feeling you here in spirit and not seeing you in person takes some getting used to, Danny. The people who love you most of all are having an especially hard time with that. It’s even hard for me, and like I said, I didn’t even know you.

The Danny Did Foundation is going to accomplish so much in your name. And, that’s a great thing, Danny. You have fans from all over the world who hug life a little harder because YOU DID that.  What your parents are doing is making a huge difference. There’s a lot of love all over this planet for you, Danny. More people know you than will ever know me. I’m proud to be one of them.

But, the truth of the matter is that there is no accomplishment big enough to make you not being here worth it. Even a cure for Epilepsy in your name doesn’t come close. It can’t, Danny. Nothing can or will ever compare to having you here. Nothing.  And, that makes the progress on this journey to greatly reduce deaths from SUDEP really hard  to reconcile sometimes. The loss of you is attached to this progress. If you were still here, The Danny Did Foundation wouldn’t be. No matter what happens now or in the future, or how much good is done in your name, your Mom and Dad, Mary Grace, Johnny, Tommy and all the friends and family who loved you in your four years here, will always wish that you were STILL here…instead.

So, we need your help, Danny.

Help us to NOT compare your life to anything that is accomplished in your name as we look for purpose and reason. The accomplishments will fall so short and won’t end up FEELING like accomplishments if we compare them to having you here.

Thank you for reading. This family is so special. They are doing some really amazing things in the face of this tragedy.

Dannydid.org is a page to visit if you are not on Facebook.

Please support the cause with your love. That\’s what matters most of all. I learned that from Danny….

I don\\\’t know this story but am going to the Facebook Page you reference. I will gather some support here in London for this.

    Thank you for writing.

A touching and heartfelt tribute that brought tears to my eyes gianne, thanks so much for sharing… this is so sad yet beautiful.

  • gianne on Mar 3, 2010

    Thanks, Kate.

Danydid.org has a strong voice in in the medical community in just a few months. Anyone who suffers with the horror of night time seizures while sleeping can feel very hopeful that things are changing.

Danny isn’t done making a difference. Not by a long shot.

Crying here. Hoping that this family is able to feel their child and that they put an end to SUDEP for good. I have a friend whol lost her 9 year old to it in December too. I’ll send her the link to the page.

    That was beautifully written, gianne.

What a beautiful way to view this. I hope his family knows it’s here and reads it. I lost a child many years ago and I wish I had exactly these words to help me with my struggle of letting the past go without feeling like I was letting my daughter go too.

    You are a gifted writer.

God bless the family. I’m headed to Facebook to support them.

What a special way to see the end of life here and the beginning of a different kind of life. If they have 7000 people on their Facebook page in less than 2 months, something (or someone) is creating that. It’s not of this world, that’s for sure.

Glad to have stumbled on this.

  • Lauren on Mar 4, 2010

    Wow, that’s beautiful.

  • georgia on Mar 4, 2010

Danny Did is unbelievable! You don\’t need to have epilepsy in your life to find a message there.

I found it when you last wrote and visit daily.

    Great writing.

  • Christine Ramsay on Mar 5, 2010

That is a really beautiful tribute to this little boy. I hadn’t heard of him before but his passing is doing much to help fellow sufferers.
Thank you so much for this piece.

  • gianne on Mar 5, 2010

Thanks, Christine. This Foundation is making a BIG difference. They have met with the medical community here in Chicago and are responsible for some new studies that will be done with Emfit monitors and using them to detect seizures in sleep.

Danny is at the heart of all this effort and 7000 Facebook Fans in less than 2 months, only tells a small part of this story.

If you don’t use Facebook, they are also at dannydid.org. It is SO worth the visit.

    Thanks a bunch for reading!!!!

  • Marie James on Mar 5, 2010

That is so tender. I can feel little Danny nodding his head as you ask for his help. You’re right too. It doesn’t have to compart to having Danny here to also be beautiful.

You did a great job of simplifying a really complicated concept. One that I think any parent who loses a child struggles with, but has a hard time articulating.

I would post your link on Epilepsy Pages on Facebook. It will bring people to Danny’s page.

It’s so hard to lose a child to anything. There isn’t a reason that ever makes the loss feel ok.

This breaks my heart, but you’re right. Comparing isn’t the right way to handle moving on.

  • John on Mar 8, 2010

What a great way to view this. I am in awe.

  • Megan Myers on Mar 8, 2010

  • Mary Stewart on Mar 21, 2010

You write from the heart and with such honesty. My eyes were tearing while I read, not because I felt sad, but because writing like this touches all of us in our most sensitive places.

It’s beautiful. Sounds like this little boy was too.

  • friend on Mar 29, 2010
