A short essay about an illiterate but successful man.
What I admire about Jimmy is the fact he has survived in this highly technical world. On his own, he could have ended up institutionalized, homeless or worse. He’s an easy target and society could have swallowed him up and discarded him. It’s a shame he’ll never know what it is to write a letter to an old friend or scribble a note to a loved one. He can’t send an anonymous e-mail to his boss to secretly inform him of an embarrassing error, on the manager’s part, to prevent the whole department from knowing about it. I know he lacks a formal education and I appreciate his strong vocation. He’s taught me how to be a better supervisor and to be careful of prejudice. My spirit is lifted when I see how fortunate he feels and it gives me bigger aspirations. It’s inspiring the way he shows up for work every day, delighted to be there, to be alive, to be contributing, to supporting his family, to brighten someone’s day, to be a man.
