Times are hard in the future. Harvey does his job.

Harvey Track hated his job. Times were hard and jobs were scarce, so of course he was grateful to have a job at the orphanage. But what he did on a day to day basis churned his stomach. He disposed of unwanted people. And since the ’90’s, when the population of the earth exploded from ten billion to thirteen billion in just ten short years, children were not wanted, but orphans could be used.
A combination of many things caused the sudden population boom. One was that people lived longer. Look at Harvey… he was 88 years old and still working every day. His own stem cells had cured his diabetes and mended his bad heart and he expected many more years of healthy life. Harvey’s first job that morning was to sell the body of a young woman who had delivered a child the evening before. She hemorrhaged and died early in the morning.

When Harvey first got to work, he went into the crowded newborn ward to look at the little fellow, so he knew what to say to her as he loaded her onto his hand cart, “You gave birth to a healthy, darling little boy last night. I’ll bet you’re proud of him.”
Harvey checked the address. He was to take her to the Des Moines Medical School across town and sell her for $100.00. It was a long walk pushing a cart, but he made it in a couple of hours. As he helped to unload the young woman at the medical school, he talked to her. “You’ll like it here. You’ll be doing a great service to mankind helping train fine young doctors who might someday save a lot of lives. I wish one of those lives had been yours. But you’ll like it here, just the same.”
