The effect of technology on human memory and brain abilities.
People used to remember stuff! You remembered the birthdays of family and friends and remembered to buy and post a card in time. People used to remember how to get from home to relatives houses or be able to read a map, plan a route and follow it and arrive at a holiday home that they had never been to before. When you went to a pub the barman used to be able to add up the round in their head and quickly get on to the next customer. There was local knowledge so you would know where restaurants were in your area or the times of the local buses and trains into town.
Now you send birthday cards via an internet provider that you have setup to remember the birth dates, full addresses of you family and friends and you have setup email reminders – they even stamp and mail the cards for you. You SatNav is used almost every time you venture out and you shudder at the thought of being without it. Even though you’ve been to that nice farm shop 5 times you haven’t bothered to remember how to get there – why should you when Tom Tom makes it so easy. Can people work out a budget for their monthly outgoings so that they don’t go overdrawn of over stretch themselves on credit – is there an app for that? Phones may now be smart but this is probably at the expense of there owners who go round in a daze failing to work out the simplest of things for themselves – these are the Homo Zapiens who expect instant information without taxing their grey matter!
