And interesting reminder of how life changes.

The other day I was sitting on the sofa with a friend of mine. She asked me if it was raining. There was a window behind me, a door maybe 7 feet away, and I looked up the weather on my laptop. I told her, “it says it’s raining”, and we left it at that. It wasn’t raining. It was bright and sunny, and took me 5 minutes to figure out that WOW, I could have just turned around to find out. That’s when it hit me: I rely far too much on technology.

I’ve become so reliant on technology that I have lost common sense. I use spell check so much that I no longer just Know how to spell some words. Along with common sense, it appears that I’ve also lost my patience. I get upset if I can’t fast forward through commercials. I even yell at the microwave for taking too long. For example: Two weeks ago I had something of a panic attach when my cell phone battery died on the way home from work. I was positively fretful. What was I concerned about, that I wouldn’t be able to get from point A to point B without a working cell phone? I had to remind myself that I’d been driving for years and years before every having one anyway, I managed it well enough then!

I wouldn’t give up the technological advances that mean so much to me, but I do worry that someday there will be a generation of people who don’t know how to properly brush their teeth (Too used to using an electric toothbrush). Or they won’t know how to use the library card catalogue. Or, worst of all, cook a meal in the oven.
