Scientists are now trying to make a miniature star right on Earth!
So the objective of this project is to direct hundreds of laser beams into one point to create a star on Earth. These lasers are gigantic and if it were to be successful scientist’s would develop a way to harvest the energy of the star for use!
1. Pulse of light – Scientist’s have created the biggest lasers in the world that go as long as three football fields! It starts with a single pulse of light which travels down many fiber optic cables!
2. Power up – To make these lasers powerful enough to generate a star they need to be passed down many amplifiers. The pulse travels a long period before it actually is used for generating the star, as the laser travels through the amplifiers the strength of the laser is increased a quadrillion times! x 1 000 000 000 000 000!
3. Laser beams – The laser beam is split into 192 parts which are all aimed into one specific point. The 192 beams of light provide the perfect amount of heat and pressure to start up a nuclear fusion for the creation of the star.
4. Fusion – All the beams are focused on a small tiny dot of hydrogen isotopes, this would act as the fuel in order to get a reaction going and creating the star. The amount of heat and pressure the lasers give would hopefully cause the hydrogen isotopes to fuse together which is equivalent to the types of reactions in real stars.
Apparently it may be difficult for scientists to carry out the test this summer but they are certain it will be held in about 2 years. Does that sound familiar to you? 2012!!! End of the world! What a coincidence!

I personally wonder what would happen if this test goes wrong or if the star is created and dies, when stars die don’t the explode?? We’ll just need to wait and see if 2012 is actually the end of the world.
