Selecting good and suitable texts is crucial in learning.
Literary texts which are used must be readable, comprehensible and interesting (Chitravelu, Sithamparan, & Teh, 2005). There are three things to consider before choosing the texts for the teaching and learning session, which are; the student, the text and the teacher.
In selecting the right texts, it is vital to know the students’ background, their language proficiency, their cognitive and social development and their interests. As for the texts, the teachers must examine the content, language and the physical features of the texts as well. The teachers too need to consider their own opinion on the texts as well. It is important that the teachers are interested on the texts because teachers’ interests will be obviously seen in the class, therefore will affect the lesson and the students’ perceptions of the texts.
In conclusion, students should not be bored with complex literary texts and monotonous activities in class, or else they will have lack of interest in learning literature. In fact, they will not even bother the special and exciting elements in literature itself. It is mainly teachers’ responsibility to generate interesting ideas to attract the students. The learning environment depends almost solely on teachers to make learning more interactive and lively. Learning literature should be fun and awesome instead of the most current dreadful and horrid literature classes. Therefore, it was hoped that motivation increase, interesting activities, reading interest stimulation and text selection suggested are helpful and have potential to be adopted in teaching literature in the future.
