Pondering why despite all the focus, Trolls still prosper.
We were discussing Trolling of a particular network. At the same time I was receiving replies from what seemed, at first bounce an average user who questioned my ‘attack’ on the site.
Those of you who have used Reddit know how quickly a submission can be voted down. So far, Seven seconds is the record. Clearly, no one could have read the first sentence, even loaded the article in that time. Most of you know not to try to Reddit your own stuff without sandwiching it between cute puppies, jokes, news and something else. While many people shrug when they read the; “This article must have been written by a six year old…” or “This is Crap!” when they’ve gotten googals of hits and a long line of positive comments on Triond.
So it seemed a bit odd to me that posting the obvious would be seen as an ‘attack’ and one pathetic creature would remonstrate about such a untowards sortie.
I let the replies go back and forth a bit, until she revealed herself as no more nor less than a Troll Hag.
Troll hags, (considering Trolls are sexless are also sexless) are those who defend the actions of Trolls by making it seem that the victim is at fault.
You’ve seen it on message boards, in fora, just about every where. A Troll, out of nowhere, attacks you, and if you dare respond, if you even mention you’ve been the subject of a Troll, the Troll Hag will be there, at first as the ‘impartial’ judge, to gain your confidence, then, reveal itself to be what it is; a creature who hasn’t the ability to attack itself but supports the attacks made by others.
Trolls survive because they all have gangs of supporters who take pleasure out of other people’s pain.
Sure, a few times a totally innocent person will be fooled into thinking; “Poor little Troll, why does everyone hate you?” or “Perhaps the reason your work was attacked is because it isn’t very good…” until s/he actually takes a look at what was posted.
The tragedy is, of course, that during that moment of confusion the innocent becomes a Troll Hag. Becomes a facilitator of Trolling. Becomes just as culpable as the Troll.
On any site you find Trolls you will find their supporters. Although some be unaware of their role, others embrace it.
