A brief discription of the human mind and how it can be judiciously used.

1.         It is but, the ‘Human Mind – which is a Powerful Weapon”.   If we look at the topic per-say two questions come to mind. The first is “What is a weapon?”, and the second is “What is mind?”

2.         Firstly, “What is a weapon?” The Oxford dictionary defines a weapon as “a means employed for trying to gain the advantage in a conflict”. The conflict may be with another person, with a particular interest of yours, or in the extreme case, may even be within your own body.

3.         The second question is, “What is mind?” This is the highly developed capacity for thought, feeling and deliberate action which distinguishes a human being from the rest of nature. It has to do with abstract reasoning, intellectual pursuits, and the exercise of intelligence.

4.         Although, many theories of the exact existence and nature of the mind exist, Plato, a Greek philosopher and mathematician stated that the mind is an entirely non-material entity, which is distinct from the human body, and is able to exist apart from it. He believed that the mind was in charge of the body, and directed its movements.

Functioning of the human mind

5.         The human mind functions simultaneously at two levels – the conscious and the unconscious, or shall we say the subconscious.

6.         To tell you how the mind functions at the unconscious level, let me site an example. Once a lady was in the family way, and had to undergo a caesarean section. The surgeon was an extremely nice middle aged gentleman, and the lady shared a nice and cordial relationship with him. However, after the surgery was over, the lady developed an unexplained hatred for her surgeon, and was even uncomfortable in visiting him for check ups; something that perplexed her. A deep psychoanalysis however solved the mystery. It was analysed that when the lady was taken for the surgery, the team of doctors involved exchanged subtle humour about parts of her anatomy, while they undertook the operation. This was natural for them as they took the job in hand as a routine everyday affair. Although, the lady was under anaesthesia, and her conscious mind had been subdued so that she would not feel the pain, her unconscious mind was active, and picked up the entire conversation. After the operation, although the lady had no conscious memory of this, her unconscious mind built up a great hatred for the surgeon.
