America sucks.

The United States of America sucks.  That’s my belief, or so I’ve been told.  You see, the big problem with me is that I tend to speak my mind.  There are problems galore in these United States.  As a people, we are naive.  We have become oblivious, and at times completely (and intentionally, by way of not caring) ignorant of what is happening in the world.  We don’t even really know what’s happening in our own country, beyond that which the media tells us.

We have a two party system that on the verge of pulling us into a political civil war.  We swim in our own arrogance, oblivious to that as well as we Tivo the world around us, hand over the civil rights we once held so dear, and move ever closer to an Orwellian society.  We worship empty celebrities, and have for generations put a premium upon beauty over substance.  We are fat.  The world around us has grown to hate us, and yet we continue to strut around like roosters, waving our flag like a phallus; not in pride, but in conceit.

There are a million issues in the United States of America, and I choose to use my small voice to try and put a spotlight on them.  But sadly, thanks to a misguided concept created by the George W. Bush administration, This has caused me to be labeled.  Because I have the audacity to question my government, to try, however futilely, to bring light to its flaws, I am a traitor.  I am unpatriotic.  And I hate the United States of America.

It amazing when you take the time to really process the fact that this has become an accepted belief in this country.  It so utterly defies the precepts on which this Nation was founded, and the principles that make it great, thay even words like oxymoron fail to do it justice.

We desperately need to stop believing our own hype.  Civic pride and Patriotism are important, but we’ve become so preoccupied with the idea that “We’re #1!” , and selling the belief, that we’re losing sight of what made us great.

Questioning the establishment is the very definition of American Patriotism.  It’s what has always set us apart from the rest of the world; the ideal of ‘For the people, by the people’.  One of the most apt quotes I’ve ever heard came from a former U.S. Army soldier.  In the midst of a political debate, the strongly conservative and highly decorated soldier said to his liberal debate opponent: “I strongly disagree with your beliefs.  However, I fought , and watched men die, because I believe in your right to have them.”

This is America.  This is what makes us great.  My dissent doesn’t mean I hate America; it means that I love my country in the way it was meant to be loved.

Everytime I see a sensational title like “I hate the United States of America” I presume that someone’s pathetically scraping for popularity. (After that Eminem article of yours, I was sceptical.) But this note has such a humble voice that I have to applaud your penmanship. Well done. I’m disillusioned right alongside you. Some of your words ring true in Australia also, where instead of near civil war politics, we have two conservative parties that render our execute arm paralysed (Kyoto Agreement) and polity in dismay (without compulsory voting, I don’t know a single person who would bother). No rights, no responsibility, no progression and no idea of how to change. Give it a couple of decades and Australia might become a social clone of the USA yet.

Wow a tirade of opinions! you are bound to get plenty of hits on this article with a title that you have chosen. I do agree with alot of what you say but I am British so my opinion is mute really. The few Americans I have met have been really nice people. Britain has always just had a 2 party system and they are sounding more like eachother every day! In Britain too the general public cares more about celebrities than politics or what they are having for tea! the percentage of people that excersise their right to vote is at an all time low approx 30%! the 70% that dont vote moan the loudest when they dont get what they want! as you Americans say “Go figure” LB

I applaud this, our face has become soiled from a rumbled mess of arrogance and ignorance…

But we must hold hope that this will soon change….AND SOON!

Agreed. It seems that the “American way” has become the way of self indulgence and conceit these days. However, I’m not sure if it is intentional neglect of social and political issues or just a sincere ignorance about what is going on in the world. I was speaking with a young man (15 years of age) about a basketball game. As he recited the information about the players, I was astounded. He had memorized the entire roster by name, age, and birthplace (I’m a huge fan and I couldn’t come close to anything like this). Intrigued, I asked the young man if he was a straight “A” student assuming that the boys talent must have been noticed by others but he responded that he hated school and that he’d abstain from going if he could. As a makeshift social experiment, I asked him if he knew the ages and birthplaces of his political leaders. He named Chicago, IL as the birthplace of President Barack Obama and guestimated that he was about 30 years old (I guess he was unaware that presidents must be atleast 35 years of age). The point is our children and many of our citizens have become more concerned with celebrities than the leaders of our country. What we care about as citizens has to change if we are to change the culture.

You question the morals of America. A lot of people do that because this country allows it. What are your suggestions to make us better. Do you think the Islam religion would bring out the best in us? You rightly expand upon your subject and say we have a million faults. But if I compare it to most Arabian countries I think we have a far more compassionate and tolerant people.
Many of the Arabian countries are too primitive in their religion.
I think they’re basically very good people in those countries but they have to come a long way in the real world. They need to bury Islam with the past. That would be a very wise thing.

Once reading the title I was skeptical but after reading it I did enjoy it. Your right there are lots of things that needs to be fixed here. I love America but it’s the America were once were not what we become.

Alright Mo. I love America for what it’s supposed to be. The general public follow along like herded cattle. It’s shameful.

  • serowa on Jan 8, 2010

Superb article as usual but then I am a foreigner. America prides itself of its freedom but I have come to understand that freedon only extends to agreeing with the way things are. If you question the thinking, then you are anti- America.

@T.Rex Mcggogle, When you start comparing yourself with others and refer to them as primitive you retain an attidue of arrogance, and the assumption that you are better. I think you should look at the issues in your country without comparing them with any other country.

A thought provoking article from, I suspect, a real patriot in the good old fashioned sense of the word.

BTW, love how one commentator manages to get religion in here – or rather a jab at Islam… pointing out the flaws of another system to hide the ones inherent in your own is a very old trick.

Someone in the last century did it with BIG results. What was his name again. Ah, yes. Adolf.

PS Have Triond put this on Authspot (the dreaded in terms of revenue) because it is personal opinion or are they being contrary?
