Maybe I’m complaining too much, but to me most places just ruin a burger.

Every time I watch TV, I usually see a commercial for some burger place.  Each place claims that their burger is better than some other place.

Most of the time they talk about the meat.  To me the meat seems the same no matter where I eat a burger.  It is rare to find some place that actually make the meat any different.  So if I really want my meat a certain way, I make my burger at home.  Actually I would make the burger patties and my son would cook it.  My oldest is great on the grill.

Now I am going to admit that I have put other things in my burgers besides what I am going to talk about here.  For instance, I used to put potato chips in my burger just because my dad did.  We told people we wanted it crunchy.  I’m also likely to try something knew.  I once put slices of grilled squash in a burger once.  That was good until the squash wasn’t still hot.

I happen to like my meat thick with onions cooked in it.  Sometimes I put a slice of cheese on it before I take it out of the skillet.  Yum Yum melted cheese.  I’m always adding spices like pepper and garlic to the meat.  But the meat is only one thing that makes a burger good.

I know that many people will not agree with me on what makes a burger good or not.  Well they can fix their burger their way.  Here is how I like mine.

No Mayo!  That stuff taste off to me.  I use dressing.  Now here is my complaint.  When I am at a burger place, they don’t know how to count.  A burger comes with two pieces of bun.  Yet they only put the mayo on just one of them and leave the other dry.  I have no care for a dry burger.  I’ve only got so much saliva.

Don’t dice the onions.  I don’t like stuff falling out of my burger.  I have every intention of eating all of it and I can’t do that if pieces of onion fall on my lap.  I like the crunch of a good slice of onion in my burger.  I’ve been known to put more than one slice in my burger.

Don’t dice the lettuce.  Same problem.  I don’t like my lettuce falling out.  I also like more than one leaf of lettuce.

A thick slice of tomato.  Please check the tomato slices before you put them in a burger.  Hate finding that the center of the tomato is still green and hard.  Especially when I take a bite of the burger.  Actually I like to put two or more slices of tomato in my burger.

Got to have dill pickles.  I know at the burger place, they got to save on money, so they won’t be buying those pickles that are slices longways.  I like those longways sliced pickles in my sandwiches and burgers.  I especially like a nice crunchy pickle.

Now to build it.  Take your two slices of bun (freshly toasted) and put dressing on both.  Then lay them open on the place.  I like to put the tomato on bottom, then onion and then lettuce.  Then a little dab of ketchup and maybe some mustard before putting the meat on top of that.  Then of course the cheese.  Now don’t forget the top of the bun.   Now all I need is fries and a root beer.  Lets dig in.

When I was a meat eater I liked my burgers just exactly as you discribe. I didn’t like any chopped lettuce or onion. Like you I wanted it in one slice. Hmm makes me hungry for a good hamburger.

If you want a perfect burger, you have to make it yourself.

Sounds good. I read your breakfast article and know you like things spiced. To hot up your burger try using English mustard instead of Ameican style mustard. But use less!!

Yummy! Incidentally, you can get pretty tasty results using textured vegetable protein instead of beef–especially with quality toppings like the ones listed.

I don\’t like beef burgers so i can\’t comment, nor do i like mayo and onions. But i do know where you are comming from, nobody cooks it the way you cook it. I agree.

Well..I don’t know about the cheese or the dressing,,but your version of a hamburger sounds great. Very few restaurants make one worth eating I think.I have nothing against an onion as long as I carry breath mints on me if Im out.

Sounds good except for the salad dressing!
