A thought provoking article on the plight of workers world wide.
May Day or international Labour Day is observed every year. As every body knows its aim is to remember the martyr labourers of the 18th century who began fighting for their rights. Witty speeches are delivered by leaders of political parties, labour unions, and chief executives of multinational organisations along with the business tycoons. Each and every person who steps on the rostrum promises the same thing, the rights of the labourers. After the observance of many hundred labour days the condition of the labourers has not changed slightly.
On the contrary many impartial observers are of the opinion that they have been entangled more tightly in the web of the wealth of the multinational corporations. The processions meetings and walks on the eve of World economic forum’s meetings are the proof of this argument. The sensible persons are of the opinion that the workers are more exploited in this advance ages compared to the past. Although they know more about their rights yet are obliged to earn livelihood in the factory of a rich person affiliated with the multinational corporations. Every body knows about the basic philosophy of these corporations. They are always hunting for the cheap labour. They select the site for their production unit where there is labour is available at nominal wages. They have set up their plants in the third world countries or import labour from these countries. It has become just a ritual to observe the Labour Day. No practical step is ever taken for the betterment of the poor workers. The companies help each other but do not assist the workers. Many workers die in harness and their families are not compensated fully. There are many places in the world where such deaths are considered a routine matter and absolutely ignored.
In advanced countries too the due respect and wages are not paid to the poor workers especially the immigrated labour. What is the advantage of the formality of observance of such days when there is nothing in the form of out put? The wealthy business cartels invite media and gather for photo session just for publicity. They hire some persons in the name of labour leaders and show a great concern during the presence of media. Soon after he is paid for smiling and admiring the cartels services for the labourer and disappeared. There is a great need of doing some thing practical in this regard. There is no dearth of laws and rules. There is a set pattern of United Nations organisations. The countries whose tongues never dry chanting slogans of human rights should fight for the poor not with them. The united nations promulgate sanctions against the countries which do not yield to the dictates of the super powers but do nothing against the same powers which defiantly violate human rights .
The time has come when the United Nations should do justice to each and every small and big state. It is the only solution to the plight of the poor and labourers; otherwise it would be nothing more than a ritual and formality.
