This story is about the fact that my homeland (Tonga) and it’s neighbouring country (Samoa) was struck by the killer wave/tsunami and took the lives of many who were on the islands.
I maybe nostalgic, growing up in Tonga, a developing country, but it was like paradise. Everything was for free. The island foods were free, the water was free, every family had their own farm where they breed and feed their own animals. Women’s role were solely to look after the children and the town allotment, and the men were to go to the bush allotment everyday, plant crops and bring food home to feed the family. People were healthier then than now. Walking to and from church, shops, meetings or just visiting friends and relatives. Now my mind was just wondering about these statements doubting which one is the right one? EVERY CHANGE IS A DEVELOPMENT OR EVERY DEVELOPMENT IS A CHANGE!
A lot of changes has occured in the Pacific Islands, but i often wonder whether they are good changes or not?
The disaster that destroyed Samoa and Tonga is one of it’s kind and nothing like that had ever happened before. A lot of our people are asking a lot of questions these days, whether it’s just Global Warming or are we near to the end of the world? Not long ago, one of the ferries in Tonga sunk to the deep sea, killing about seventy four people, from all ages. Now the earthquake happened between Samoa and Tonga and destroyed the land, peoples’ belongings and even took peoples’ lives unexpectedly. A few days later, another earthquake shook part of Indonesia, a typhoon destroyed the Phillipines, Vietnam and Cambodia. The questions still lingers in my head now? which country will be next? will it be New Zealand? How will i save my children? How can i survive? I don’t want to die? because my children are still young? I can’t bear the thoughts of loosing them now? I am not ready to depart from them, because i really love them so much. They are my life, my only world. But at the same time i also wondered where’s my faith in God? Should i sit and worry or should we prepare to the next life? I am a christian, and i love it so much, but sometimes i doubt the level of my belief in God, because i know i am a sinner, an am only human.
Now the Big questions that i ask now? is that what should we do? is this a warning of the coming of the end of the world? or is it just the climate change? Waht can we do to prevent it from happening to us? to the world?
