The things I have been noticing about the supermarket giant.

Well let me say i have been shopping at Woolworths for my groceries for many years, i have never really had a complaint. I figured they were Australian, supported Australian products, were not to pricey and had a good range. That did me fine.

I started to open my eyes when I had my babies, every time i got used to a product it would be discontinued, how annoying but i put it down to my local Woollies being a small shop. It was still annoying and now i started being a little more alert.

Specials, i began to hate specials, why? Because what I noticed Woolworths tended to do is increase the price and then put it on special to mask the price rise. Tell you that your saving $1.80 when your really only saving $1.00 and then as soon as the special is over.. there it is at the new recommended price.

I watched a program once which talked to all the producers of the products, they stated that Woolworths makes them lower their prices for the specials, so in fact they pay for them. They also have to pay for the transport to the warehouses.

So my shopping experience is filled with dread and guilt, i enjoy strolling through the aisles and looking at the new products or spotting a really good special. Now i look at the bottom line of the special to see what i will be paying next week. This is a rotten practice may i say.

Another thing i have noticed is they started stocking their aisles with their own brands, there has always been no name products but now there is Woolworths Select. Why? and Why does jam need to be made in Denmark for God sake. Why cant you source it in Australia. Why did you have to take Golden Circle of the racks, why are you eradicating the brand names.

This is a huge down fall as Woolworths seems to believe we are all drones and don’t need choice, all we need is their products at inflated prices. I want my brands back, i want to look at the labels and check out who makes them. I want to support my local growers and producers and companies. I already hate the name Woolworths Select.

As you have started clearing the racks of brand names and replacing them with your own, my shopping experience has dropped remarkably so now Super Barn is on the horizon, there might not be as many shops but their products are wide and varied.

It seems Woolworths you have lost touch with your market, you have now decided to tell the market how it is.

This is something i have heard time and time again, I always thought it was just me but i have been shocked to here so many gripes about the store now i have decided to walk the walk..

I find your article interesting because the same things happen in the U.S and Canada, but it seems as though nobody does anything about it. We’ll just complain for a while then eventually accept the fact that these corporations are ripping us off. They expect us to just take it, and we do.

Drones? I think we’re becoming them, we’re so apathetic that we’ll deal with almost anything nowadays.

Hi Sienna, did you know that you can have your say about these issues on the Woolworths company blog as part of their Everyday Rewards program? You will need to register your Everyday Rewards card and join the blog. Then you can make suggestions / complaints and other people in the online community can comment and vote (on your idea/comment). I hope you find it useful. The URL is http://www.everydayrewards.com.au and you click on the tab “My Community, share your thoughts”. In the interest of full disclosure, I work with Woolworths on this blog. Thanks
