The struggle of working with people who are afraid to let anyone succeed in the work place. Why? Could be fear of job security or plain ignorance.
If knowledge is power, than why is it when you know too much at your place of business people feel threatened by you and look for ways to sabotage you? It amazes me that an individual who feels threatened by newcomers; younger colleagues and those with far more intelligence than they have will tend to withhold information from those trying to improve themselves.
The ignorance of those people in semi-high positions fails to amaze me as I watch them working through the day like rats in a maze. These are the same people who started out at the bottom of the barrel, struggled, suffered long hours at work to get to where they are today. Have they forgotten they were just as afraid as we were when we were the new kids on the block? Is it too much to ask for a mentor who truly will help you gain knowledge and excel at what you signed up to do? This is no way for any person who struggled and feared rejections to act with those who are now walking a mile in their shoes.
I sit back and observe how society and those weak enough to prey on the innocent go about their daily routines. It’s amazing what you can tell from a person just by observing and listening. Hell, at times observing the idiotic ways of those ignorant enough to think they’re above the law is better than watching reality television…and I love me some “Bridezilla” TV. So it doesn’t surprise me when I feel that throbbing pain in my back at times because it’s the proverbial “knife in the back” or dare I say ‘daggers’ we often hear people speak of but think of it as an exaggeration of words. Well either the daggers or knives are working or I need to get myself a better mattress to sleep on.
Seriously though, if we were to help each other and work as a team, do we not believe that our success will be their success as well? Do they not consider that some day the one person they’ve ignored or chose to step over to climb that imaginary ladder may one day be the person to help them during their struggles or yet, give them the opportunity not given to us? I often wonder what it would be like if these self appointed leaders would benefit from a visit from the ‘ghost of Christmas past, present and future’.
But that my friend is another story which I may feel inclined to cover in another article.
