         Reading implies deciphering graphic signs in order to obtain idea , which is possible only when certain

factors reach the right level of complex maturity. Reading involves intellectual skills ( of  generalisation and

abstraction ) , linguistic abilities ( phonation and auditory reception, verbal symbolisation and codification ) ,

perceptive-motor capacities ( recognition and distinction of shapes and comprehension of their meaning ) and

socio-affecive abilities.

         If a child can read before the age in which its peers normally do, this may be a sign of superior intelligence.

However, there are cases of children who have a subnormal intelligence, because of brain damage or mental

deficiency, for instance, but who posesss a great capacity for premature reading. Furthermore, a child with a

superior level of intelligence may not show any signs of reading precociousness.
