French and English scientist are planning "journey to the center of the the earth".
Two ambitious geologist from England and France have forged a plan to implement the idea, that has so far existed only in science fiction. Damon Teagle of the National Oceanographic Centre in Southampton and Benoit Ildefonso at the University of Montpellier claimed to penetrate the Earths crust and penetrate the Earths upper mantle. Their goal, they explained in an interview with U.S. CBS, is to get samples from the Earths mantle, which should reveal new information on the origin and history of our planet. Earths interior, even for the modern science is still largely an enigma. Scientists are not really sure how magma moves through the Earths mantle, an area that man has failed to investigate.

“If we could get to sample of the Earths mantle, they could give us much better estimates of the geological composition of our planet Earth and understand the process of evolution, “says Teagle, who will, together with his colleague this spring, start the search for a suitable place to drill, which will probably take place somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. The three most likely locations are Hawaii, Costa Rica and Baja California.
Drilling should begin within a few years, and the process will take between 18 months and two years, as scientists will be needed to break through the Earths mantle. This is also the second attempt of “the journey in the center of the earth. ” The first time a scientific expedition tried to do this 1961st year, and all was followed by the writer John Steinbeck, who immortalized the drilling in the magazine Life. The result, however, was not satisfying: only samples were collected from the upper layers of the crust before the U.S. Congress terminated the funds from the scientists.

But Teagles and Ildefonsos expedition could produce dramatically better results, thanks to huge technological progress made in the last 50 years. “After all, we have a much better understanding of what we want to achieve. We understand how oceanic crust is formed and we are know the differences between the crust and mantle. Unfortunately, some details are still unclear, “says Teagle.
