Last Goodbye
By Serina Mara D. Alonzo
One specific thing that held Giuliana and Grendellock together was music; despite having lost his sight, Grendellock’s voice could resemble those of angels. He had passion in everything that he did, and on his bad days, singing would take his worries away. Giuliana shared the same happiness with Grendellock through music; every time they wanted to, they would both sit by the piano, and Grendellock would play. Sometimes Giuliana would play, but she preferred listening to Grendellock’s art. It was out of the ordinary. Playing kept him thinking—sometimes it would feel as if it took the place of the world around. She wanted to learn to love music the way Grendellock did.
One day after school, in the midst of their common pastime, Grendellock came up with a whole new different tune. It sounded like a nightingale’s song. It was beautiful.
“Grendellock, how do you make such beautiful music?” Giuliana asked, “You have no piece to see, yet it’s more than what an ordinary piece could ever hold.”
“When a song’s close to your heart,” he said, “she’s like an instrument close to your heart. You have to hold her close to you before you could feel her.” He pressed his fingers on the keyboard and played a simple tune.
“It’s still as beautiful,” said Giuliana, “What music are these that can be held close to hearts? What do you feel?”
“Music is still music—she’s with no difference. She draws to you when you love her, and she belongs to all who has a need for her. She’s something I have never betrayed.” Grendellock paused for a while and started humming in his tune. “I feel… it’s indescribable.”
