This article describes compost and how to make good compost.

Compost is a mixture of decomposed organic material that has many benefits. Compost enriches the soil like no other fertilizer can. Compost acts as a moisture retention additive, which significantly reduces pest infestations and diseases.

To make a good compost you will first need to pick a shady spot in your yard, but make sure the pile will be several feet away from your home. Purchasing a compost bin is not mandatory, but in order to keep pests out of your compost pile, a compost bin would be ideal.

If you do not prefer to purchase a compost bin, there is another option. You can make one using a garbage can. You will need to put several airholes in the sides to allow for air circulation. Decomposition will be much quicker. Or you can just make your compost pile loosely on the ground.

Next, gather your ingredients, such as leaves, straw, grass clippings, old prunings, and old twigs and branches. Throw these items onto your pile.

Next, cover pile with approximately 3-5 cups of soil.

Next, gather other ingredients out of your kitchen, such as egg shells and cartons, coffee grounds and tea bags. Be sure to break down these items, as this will speed up the decomposition process.

Next, cover this layer with another 3-5 cups of soil.

Next, sprinkle pile with any all-purpose fertilizer.

Next, moisten pile with boiled water that you have cooked vegetables in, or miracle-gro plant food.

If you are using a garbage can, do not cover all the way, leave about a 1/2 inch space at the top.

Turn your pile every 2-4 days. Your pile is ready when the ingredients are no longer recognizable, and the pile is cool. This could take up to a month, sometimes two months.

TIPS:

Composting bags are available online.

If you add ingredients to your pile daily, make sure they are in very small quantities.

WARNINGS:

You might see steam arising from your pile, this just means that your pile is heating properly.

Never add dog or cat manure.

Never use any meat.

Do not use metal products.
