Man has botfly larvae that were most likely put there by mosquitoes living inside his head.
Aaron Dallas, Carbondale Colorado, found that he had botfly larvae living in a 3mm pit near the top of his skull! They were thought to be most likely put there by a mosquito, on his holiday to Belize in summer for a charity event. The first time he went to the doctors with bleeding sores they said he most likely had an infected fly bite, so the doctor gave him some cream to use.
The cream wasn’t working, there was no improvement, so he went to a specialist who diagnosed him with shingles, a painful skin condition. Then he started noting that the sores on his head were moving! ”I’d put my hand back there and feel them moving. I thought it was blood coursing through my head.” he said.
He once again returned to the doctor, who finally diagnosed him with the true problem, botfly larvae. He was thought to have gotten it on his holiday, as botflies are more common in tropical regions. “I could hear them – I actually thought I was going crazy.” he quotes after being diagnosed.
He then went through surgery to remove the larvae from his scalp, done by Dr. Kimball Spence. The surgery was succesful, now his wife loves to tell friends about his story, but Aaron still says: “It’s much funnier to everyone else.”
