Why the Mayan Apocalypse predictions are wrong.

Some people have read over the internet and in the paper that the worlds going to end on the 22nd of December 2012.

People seem really cut up about it because they think that the worlds going to end in about four years.

This is relevant but human clocks have not been correct to the second throughout the centuries.

Gradually we lose time so we may think it is say, Saturday the 13th but it could be a different date completely.

It has been calculated that we have lost four years, so it is actually 2013 right now.

Which means that the Mayan apocalypse has passed.

Do you see any apocalyptic behaviour in your area?

Meteors destroyed your state recently?

I think not.

If you want more information see the Maya calendar article on Wikipedia or the second chapter in Dr Karl  Kruszelnicki’s new book Science is Golden.

Note that I didn’t get my information from either of these.

People have been predicting the end of the world since civilisation began. Weren’t we all supposed to die in 2000? But your rationale seems sound (but does that mean I’m four years older?)
