In addition to its line of inboard engines, Mercury Marine also makes its MerCruiser stern-drives and compatible engines. The stern drive has its own lubrication system separate from the engine itself, which keeps the bearings, gears and shafts from overheating during operation. Mercury produces three grades of gear lube that it recommends for use in its MerCruiser stern drives.

  • Mercury Premium Gear Lube

  • Mercury Premium Gear Lube meets or exceeds the specifications of a SAE 80W90 gear lubricant. It has a viscosity of 157 cSt at 40 degrees C. Premium Gear Lube has a density of 7.42 lbs. per gallon and a specific gravity of 0.89. It has a closed-cup flash point of 356 degrees F. It is dark amber in color.
  • Mercury High-Performance Gear Lube

  • Mercury High-Performance Gear Lube meets or exceeds the requirements of an SAE 90 gear lubricant. It has a viscosity of 152 cSt at 40 degrees C and a density of 898 kg per cubic meter. The lubricant has a closed-cup flash point of 338 degrees F. It is blue-green in color.
  • Mercury Multi-Purpose 2-4-C Marine Lubricant

  • Mercury also recommends Multi-Purpose 2-4-C Marine Lubricant for use on those stern drive parts requiring grease, such as bearings. This lubricant is a lithium based, NGLI Grade 2 lubricant with a viscosity of 1800 SUS at 100 degrees F. It loses only 2 percent of penetration between 60 and 100,000 strokes, according to the ASTM D 217 penetration test. It experiences less than 5 percent water washout at 100 degrees F. It is amber in color.
