The same mechanism leading to psychosomatic injury can lead to psycho-psychotic damages.
Mind, Body and Psycho-Psychotic Disorders
A great portion of an individual’s physical condition is derived of his emotional state. Mind-body impact is more prominent in the negative sense. A poor emotional state, derived of depression, sadness, ongoing frustration or negative emotional stress, adversely influences nearly every organic physical system. The list of diseases that the psyche can cause the body is amazing in scope. It includes: weakening of the natural immune system, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, diseases of the digestive system, respiratory system, joints and muscular system, headaches, skin diseases, types of cancer, flus and viral diseases, hair loss, obesity, extreme weight loss, psychosomatic diseases, autoimmune diseases, accelerated aging and more. There are various levels of damages caused to the body by the psyche, where the highest level on the scale is conscious suicide.
Cause of the Phenomenon
The scientific question of how the psyche can affect so many and such important organic physical systems in such a deep and crucial manner is at initial stages of research. In this regard, scientists are, to a great extent, groping in the dark. It is safe to assume that, at some point in the future, science will succeed in cracking the processes that link emotional problems to the illnesses they cause and will find the appropriate cures. Beyond the question of how, is another question – why? Why is it that the psyche causes the body such negative and cruel damage, in a manner that actually turns back to hurt it too? What is the rationale underlying this “irrational” behavior?
To seek an answer to this question, we must ask a different question. Not what is the reason, but rather what is the goal. If we examine this behavior of the psyche according to the outcome, i.e. where it actually leads to, we will essentially reach the conclusion that this behavior’s objective is death. In other words, the subconscious wish to die is what harms the body in all possible intensities and manners. According to Sigmund Freud, the urge of self destruction and death exist beside the opposite survival instinct..
