This is a myth about the constellation Monoceros, the unicorn, and how it got it’s place in the winter sky.
Once upon a time there lived a beautiful unicorn with silky hair, unbelievably striking sparkled eyes and a spiraling pointed horn, here name was Monoceros. She lived in a lovely enchanted kingdom on the rings of Saturn (the most amazing view in the galaxy!). She went out to explore outside of her usual domain for the first time, there were so many wonders to discover, places to explore and experiences to embrace! Each event she saw had its own unique amazement, an indescribable feeling she wouldn’t trade for anything in the world. As she was joyfully galloping about she noticed a small puppy pouting longingly alone. Swiftly she ran over to him, “What has caused you such great pain?” she asked.
“My dad took me out to show me the world; we had so much to see so we were always moving. When I saw shooting star I stopped to make a wish but unfortunately it already passed by the time my wish was over so I chased it. When I tried to find my way back to my dad I got confused and now I don’t know where to go. My home is light-years away and my dad is nowhere in sight,” he whimpered.
“What is your name?” inquired Monoceros.
“Canis,” he replied, “Canis Minor.”
“Get on my back I’ll help you find your father, just show me where you think he may be,” she said. He listened to her and just like that they were off, going several light-years per minute. It felt like they had been searching forever (more accurately a little more than an hour), when they finally heard a bark…
It was Canis Major! It turns out he was also searching on account of his lost son and was extremely relieved at the sight of him. The two dogs happily barked and sniffed in reunion. After they were done with all their merry relief and unity, Canis Major turned to Monoceros and said, “What is your name dear kind one?”
“Monoceros,” she replied.
He then said,” Kind and gentle Monoceros please accept this invitation of reward to be princess of our kingdom; you may come and go as freely as you wish. Surely this couldn’t compare to the reward you have given me but it is the best I have to offer.”
“You are so very generous, I would love nothing more than to be in your exquisite kingdom!” she gleefully accepted. They now live happily in their kingdom in the ever so enchanting winter sky.
The End.
