My take on something mistaken for a lack of motivation.

I most times have a problem getting even small projects completed. Things seem to drag on or simply fall in line to be done later. The list to be done later simply gets longer. It seems to be a built in problem at first, something repetitive and never ending.

I had to find a solution to this problem since the list of things which should be done simply kept getting longer. Not only that, it were getting me down. It seemed that I was unable to complete even the simplest task. Most times it felt really silly when someone remarked on something I started and never finished.

I blamed a lack of motivation at first. Then I realized that there was a lot of motivation when I started out. Something drowned the motivation. I had to find a way to keep things going. I had to dig deep for this one.

Then it hit me, the answer is very simple. One of the jobs I have been struggling with is fixing the tiles on the front steps. A job which would pay great dividends in love and attention from my wife’s quarters because these things are important to her. I first struggled with the old ‘There is a pay-off for everything you do’ theory that says we do things because we get something out of it. The pay off for getting this done will be good and long term, so I scrapped that theory.

I had to rethink this. Ti is actually very straightforward. The whole job will keep me bust for a bit more than half a day. I never really have time and if I do have half a day I don’t really want to spend it fixing tiles. I did sometimes have 20 minutes to spare and sometimes I were even busy with something else using the same tools. I decided to break down the job into doing two at a time and spacing it in with other things I do. Suddenly things started happening. I actually saw progress.

So that is the big secret then. Break down what you want to do in small steps and then do one. When done move on to the next. Easy – and suddenly I am feeling like a king, I am getting things done around my castle.
