A little something about my college.

Things to remark about while at NITK Surathkal :

1.       The architecture is simply inexplicable. Being a government institution you’ll find that all buildings have plenty of land around them left for landscaping, the actual built up area is a fraction of this. Rather than let that fact get you down, you could call it future planning, more nature to enjoy, less built up area or whatever comes to mind.Link it all to environmentalism and you’ll have it. Which incidentally brings me to my next point.

2.       The environment at NITK is harsh. A year at this place will impart to you a knack for identifying insect species not seen anywhere else on the planet (ok, maybe I exaggerate … very little though, mind you). The climate is freakishly hot and humid throughout the year, in the months from august to November, actually all throughout the damn year, it rains. I seriously think that on an average day you’re more likely to see more stray animals out on the streets than members of the opposite sex. Something even the teachers seem to notice. Parts of the campus are still too wild and uninhabited to traverse (I kid you not …. For example, behind the tennis courts). Also, you’ll see dogs engaging in (to quote Sheldon Cooper) ‘coitus’.

3.        Politics is an integral part of life at NITK; you’ll find within no time of joining that its split up region wise. For interest of my own sanity, I’m going to refrain from making jokes about the different party’s ( when I said interest of my sanity , you know what I mean right ? ) . I won’t make jokes, mostly because, well everyone’s pretty messed up that way. But I kid you not when I say it’s the most enjoyed thing on campus ( except you know …. The grass and stuff). Proof of this can be observed on the day of elections for various posts. On no other single day, not even during incident or after exams will you see every single person on campus outside in 1 hour .Epic.

4.       My first year at NITK having come to an end, there are some things about this college I’m thankful for.

a.       A new KFC opened up in Mangalore (our seniors tell us they’ve been waiting, we’re the chosen one’s an all that) I’m glad.

b.      Manipal is an hour in the other direction. Much to be thankful for there, the food and the sex ratio.

c.       The campus’s LAN with more than 6500 nodes at 1gbps connectivity and so many terabytes of data that it promises never to let you do another days work. But, oh wait, it doesn’t work! ….scratch that actually.

d.      At least the library has an AC reading room. Phew!

e.      They have a dirty dirty beach with dirty water. Good for mass ragging and the like if that’s your thing.

f.        They hold make up exams and don’t list your back papers anywhere (provided you pass the makeup). Such nice people.

g.       With the world’s resources in mind and a soft spot for Greenpeace and peta, they refuse to do anything about stray animals and the lack of water. Our children will thank them.

Though I may have been cribbing a lot in this little piece, it’s only because I’m now on my summer vacation and miss bitching about it there. Incidentally, this should be the college logo:

“Welcome to the real world .It sucks….. you’re gonna love it “ .
