This is a reflection on the theme of Man vs. Himself in the book "Nectar in a Sieve".
In the story “Nectar in a Sieve” by Markandaya, she conveys a battle where the main character fights to care for those she loved. It was an unforgettable novel that has wrung out my heart and showed me the knowledge of fighting against oneself.
The quote I had chosen to represent this conflict, which was located on page 87, is an insight on how the human mind thinks of itself. I remembered a time when I had to go through my inner thoughts and tried to find what was really the right choice to take. Two years ago, I had to take a stand for myself and choose a side to support. It was either to support my brother or my sister. I was in a tight situation has each event would have its pros and cons. Gradually, I came upon a solution like how the quote had described. The quote described how the main character saw with her own eyes on how the others were destroying themselves one by one.
The quote symbolizes on how the lesson is already taught. The quote itself is the answer to my problem. The main character has decided to disregard all her fate onto herself and care for her well being. Thus, in my problem, I was faced with two sides to choose from and I could not help both so I would help none. The answer would seems awkward if I help none so I chose to help both sides, I was wrong at helping both sides as the main character in the quote decide to only care for herself she manage to help herself gain more than she lost, but as I was helping both my brother and sister they both lost my intent and I end up losing more than I gain. If I was more careful, I should have follow this quote and truly understand the meaning that man is its own enemy and can only benefits itself.
