Why do we make new years resolutions? and why do we break them? some ways to make it easier for us to keep our resolutions.
The old year has bowed out and the New Year has come, and along with it inevitably the new years resolutions. Each New Year makes people hope that the coming year will be better; perhaps because the New Year signals a fresh start and we believe we can make a difference in our lives. And so we make resolutions optimistically in hopes of better ourselves.
But the thing is new years resolution rarely lasts long, after some time as the newness of the New Year fades away, so does our resolutions. Maybe resolutions aren’t meant to be kept for the whole year, some even say that we should be satisfied with who we are instead of trying to be something we are not. Nonetheless I have to say resolutions gives one a purpose, a goal to achieve in the coming year, perhaps even a challenge. We should grow and learn as a year goes by.
Most of the time resolutions are broken, because of the resolutions themselves. Don’t make amazing and complicated resolutions which are hard to stick to, make simple ones and gradually build on it. Making resolutions which can be easily made to fit into your lifestyles, means there’s a lesser chance of breaking it. Another reason why new years resolutions are broken, are probably because we can’t change overnight therefore it should be more gradual e.g. if you want to quit smoking, instead of totally stopping from January 1st, cut down on the 1st week and gradually move on. Don’t quit just because you slip, if you have broken the resolutions, don’t give up on them, continue even if you have slipped a bit, after all no one is perfect, and what matters is you are still trying.
Well regardless of past successes or lack of, let’s make this years’ list, after all the thought counts doesn’t it?
