The world prepares to see in 2012, but what does the New Year have in stock for us?

I for one am not looking forward to the New Year. I’ll be turning 20 next year and will no longer be able to hide behind the “I’m a teenager” excuse. But selfishness aside, what will 2012 have in stall for the world?

The Mayan Prophecy

According to an ancient Mayan Prophecy the world will “end” on December 21st 2012. Many people believe this to be true. I may not be an expert but I have read and watched loads of documentaries about the Mayans to know that it is not simply a case of “Running out of stone” as one faebook page suggests. The Mayans believed that this cycle of the world will end by water. This is seen in their carvings. They foretold that in the year leading to the 21st of December that thousands of people would die by water and that a greater natural water disaster would befall those who survived. I can’t help but feel a little drawn in by this. Did we not earlier this year watch in horror at the Tsunami that devastated Japan? Also did the floods in Pakistan, Australia and Thailand kill hundreds if not thousands? However I will not allow myself to believe that the whole world will end in December next year. I think it is highly unlikely though I do think something will happen that will devastate the world to a similar extent of the Tsunami in Japan. Something that will shock us and will make us stand in awe and fear of what Mother Nature can do.

The Economic Climate

This is more of my dad’s idea than my own. He thinks that by March will shall see another Euro Crisis and that the German leader Angela Merkel and the French leader Nicolas Sarkozy will both have stepped down by October. Then according to my dad, the worlds attention will shift from Europe to America, where the markets will force Obama to either step up to the mark or step down. I know virtually nothing about Economics so I shall leave it at that.

Climate Change

I believe that next year will see Political Leaders showing more of an interest in the ever changing Climate. We must do something about it and it would be foolish to ignore. The Polar Ice caps are already melting at an alarming rate. Should nothing be done sea level could rise by a meter (Please Correct me if I am wrong), which means that people on the coastlines will have to move as their homes and businesses would be underwater, or at least partly submerged. I know that it is now impossible to stop climate change, but we can still strive to protect the animals and people who will be affected by the change can’t we?

Technology

I shall only say a little on this final piece, and what I say will probably be obvious to the majority of you reading. Technology will advance even more, perhaps building newer, better robots, better machines that get work done quicker. Or maybe even perfect the electric car? Perhaphs our technology will advance in science allowng us to better understand ourselves and bringing us a step closer to curing cancer, AIDs, HIV and other incureable diseases and mutations.

Who Knows?
