Some things are just not for sale…
The 160 million population of Bangladesh have reportedly been banned by their government from downloading and using the national anthem as their ringtone on mobile phones. The decision was recently brought in a court in Dhaka. Anyone caught violating the ruling is allegedly expected to pay a fine, while the court has already ruled that the country’s three mobile service providers (catering to some 53 million clients) will jointly have to pay a penalty of the equivalent of HUF 15-mil. Incidentally the ruling is based on a complaint lodged by the national prosecution office in 2006, claiming that the mobile service providers were illegally trading the national anthem for money without having paid royalties. There is a total of 60 million mobile subscribers in Bangldesh. Service providers fear that the precedent ccase will lead to all other countries also putting a ban on ringtones that play their national anthems, unless of course the provider pays the governments a hefty royalty.
