About the book “on the sidewalk bleeding”.
On The Sidewalk Bleeding by Evan Hunter
This story is about a 16 year old boy that was in a gang called the Royals. He was stabbed by a member of the Guardians and left to die. As he lay in the rain dying, his pride for being in a gang dramatically declined. People judged him as a gang member and not as Andy.
In the static image I created, I used a variety of colours that have strong meanings. The main title “That’s for you Royal” is coloured in purple which represents the Royal’s gang colours. I chose the background of blue fading up to grey for two reasons. The blue represented the puddles of rain on the ground and the grey was the dark clouds. I also felt the blue fading to grey shows Andy slowly dying.
I’ve chosen to have Andy on his knees bleeding to death as the main focus of the image because this was a very significant event in the story. I considered having no gang jacket on Andy as in his last minutes of dying, his gang connection became insignificant to him but decided against it. This is because if Andy hadn’t been wearing the jacket, he would still be alive.
I feel the quote I’ve chosen is strong as it was the last words the Guardians said to Andy before they stabbed him. I would like to get the message across to people that it’s too late once you’re dying to regret being in a gang.
