My life is full of opinions and so is yours, whether you know or acknowledge it or not.

No matter what topic that is of interest to me, I have an opinion. I do not always seem to agree with the majority; in fact it is quite unusual for that to be the case. Now who is more correct, me or the majority? You are entitled to your opinion just like I am.

We still have some constitutional rights, which is why this is still a home of the free and the brave. We are free to vocalize our ideas, thoughts and even whims. It does not make them true for everyone, but it allows me to state my inner most reflective opinions for people to read, take or leave. Those of us, and I have a few friends who are brave enough to say what they are thinking, will be giving their opinions on the messages of their hearts. They are not with standing the perhaps reprisal of what they think, by others. Bravo to the brave, I say! I might not always agree with your opinion, but I will support your right to say it. I know someone famous said that, but I cannot give the credit to that person, right now. I do believe and live by that. Your ideas on any subject might not be what I want to hear, but I will learn from you. I might learn that you are not of this world, but lessons are learned in many different ways; reading others material is one.

Here lies another contemplative idea for my opinion to be written on the screen. How do we know where to place our trust? I do a fair amount of research before I come to an opinion. I don’t get into a firm concentration until I gather some facts. And even after those facts are compiled, that does not mean I am set in stone.

Truth or fiction, snopes are guidelines on the net. Who do you suppose runs these?

Sites? The computer, you say? Who puts the data into those machines? There you have answered my question. People, even internet people have opinions and leanings. I have discovered I cannot always rely on either of those sites to be completely reliable. Have you ever seen an article on one of those sites that reads “unable to confirm or deny”?

Do we trust the media to reveal the entire story to us, daily? Take a look at that avenue for a moment if you would, please. One night for the proof of what I am bringing into light, sit with the remote at the high time for news presentation. Tevo one station and watch the other. If you are able to get more than 2 choose only 2 news broadcasts. Compare the contents after viewing both. You will be pumped full of what the media wants you to know from both sources. Advertisers make those stations run. Without the ads the news broadcasts would not have backing. Look what the pay scale for the Mc’s is lately. I call them master of ceremonies for a reason. Some central source gathers info for the news and it is disseminated to all who report it to you. Reporters have to have some verification of the stories. How better than to share already confirmed info with all that need it.

I have opinions, so do you. If my ideas spur you into thinking for yourself on any subject, my article has done what I intended it to do. I am not starting a fan club so don’t want you to join anything except thinking for yourself. Arrive at your opinions and know I have arrived at mine, by my own admissions.

I get a rush, when I hear comments like the ones you have made in your article, more people should think for them selves, rather then being led as sheeps to the slaughter.

I love this! What a powerful outpouring of emotion and truth! Fantastic!

  • lindalulu on Jan 11, 2009

Oh Goodselfme, I absolutely loved this article! I so wish more people would think for themselves and realize that we all have our own opinions. Thank you so much for your heart felt write.

Roberta, you are my kind of person. I like honesty and a willingness to take a stand even when it is not popular. I hate to say it and I do not intend to hurt anyone’s feelings, but it is obvious that certain charismatic people can convince many to blindly follow them. Have you ever seen sheep all lined up, all following the leader, not even knowing where they are going? Many people are like this. They do not think for themselves but instead are swayed by those who can move them. Didn’t Hitler have this power? People should forget charisma, elegance and concentrate on the issues. The media misleads but many trust and believe what they hear and see. All opinions on any issue should be considered and some investigation into any subject should be done and then, an individual should form his/her own opinion. I may stand for something you may not like, but you should not show ignorance by cursing me. Just give me your rebuttal.

A lot of food for thought goodselfme. A powerful format you laid out for much discussion. Everyone should stand their ground on their belief on any issue, regardless of how the majority might feel. It’s not always wise to follow the majority anyway.

The number one problem in the world today is relativity. \”There are no absolutes,\” is the mantra of the world. (This absurd claim is itself an absolute.) From God\’s existence to mothers getting their fetuses yanked out of them–all just opinions. We can\’t arrive at any truths and there is no right or wrong. The world does not know its metaphysics. And today\’s youth are further away from knowing the invisible than any generation has ever been. Technology is a wondrous thing, but a small wonder compared to the human personality and the secrets inside us. Sad. You say we need to think for ourselves. But we should value our thoughts according to how our characters have been molded through education, solitude, suffering, experience, and a host of others. Thought is not the goal. Truth, goodness, wisdom, love–these are goals our minds and hearts should reach. Our intellects hurt us when opinions rule. Truths are not grabbed at, they grab at us. Goodness is not a decision, it\’s in our hearts like color is in our eyes. Wisdom is not learned, it\’s remembered. And love is the goal of our lives, not just a feeling. But, then again, I am just giving you my opinion. My years of prayer in a monastery, education at colleges, adventure in the world, discovery within, experience in life, etc. are nothing, relative only to me.

The thing about opinions is everyone believes theirs is the right one…how boring would our world be if we all had the same one? I say very.

  • Bren Parks on Jan 11, 2009

Opinions are a fine example of relative reality. If they were the same, the world would be very boring… :)

  • goodselfme on Jan 11, 2009

Truly so happy to see opinions. That is why this was posted. Isn’t it great that we can voice our thoughts in any direction. No condemnation for variation.Thank you for your input!

  • Joe Mello on Jan 11, 2009

Yeah, God becoming one of us…boring. A spiritual world withing us…boring. The awesomeness of an unborn child…boring. Deep wisdom…boring. A bunch of opinions…exciting. Is there not one among you who is not conformed to this idiotic world? Your posts show the shallowness of this tickle me elmo generation, always looking for a quick fix of emotion, never searching for deep answers that soothe the soul not the libido. As Spongbob would say, Good luck with that.

Yeah..u are entitled to ur own opinion—really…and it’s quiet a colorful world coz we have different point of views…

  • Clay Hurtubise on Jan 11, 2009

    Should I say ‘Welcome Back?”…
I know everyone has opinions, but why are theirs always wrong?
    Thanks,
    Clay

goodselfme, you are right, each and every one of us is entitled to our own opinion and even Joe Mello is entitled to his, but it could have been better put! It is my opinion that his quote from Spongebob puts his thinking clearly into perspective!

  • Inna Tysoe on Jan 11, 2009

In her biography of Voltaire, Evelyn Beatrice Hall (who wrote under the pseudonym of S.G. Tallentyre) wrote: “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” She attributed this quote to Voltaire although as far as we know, Voltaire never actually said this.

    Regards,

    Inna

Excellent article! What I always hated was the people who say “Opinions? Mine is mine and yours is mine.” Or is it “Yours is yours and mine is yours”? Or is it. . .

  • Darlene McFarlane on Jan 11, 2009

A brilliant article that speaks the truth. Speaking our mind is what makes this great world of ours so wonderful. I love nothing better than to read an opinionated article and take it to serious thought. I never make hasty decision until I have all the facts. When I am finished I may not come to the same conclusion as the next person but I don’t mind and I hope they don’t either.

    Good stuff!

  • rileyd on Jan 11, 2009

    This is really good.

  • Joe Mello on Jan 12, 2009

Sorry if I hurt anyone’s feelings. Oh, wait, no I’m not. Feelings are the problem. They come and go, but everyone protects them like they are worth more than the truths we must discover. So now I will only tell you stories. Children love stories. Hopefully you will one day seek to consume meat and potatoes, not the milk of babies. First story soon.

This is a great topic that has spurred a lot of discussion! A very good write.

Opinion is abstract and sometimes hardly to catch..

  • Alaina Ellington on Jan 13, 2009

Great article!! Very well written, I agree that everyone has their own opinion and they have a right to do so!! I find myself with you on many things including that you are usually opposed to other’s way of viewing things!

  • Jenny Heart on Jan 20, 2009

Professionally speaking, I think you said a mouth full of truth. Great writing!

  • AstralMelody on Jan 21, 2009

WOW! This is alot to absorb in one sitting! I love the fact that you speak your mind. It’s important as writers that we keep in mind that we are writting for ourselvs. Eventhough we share with others, it is for us. And yes good comments are nice, but if people don’t like what we have to say we cannot let that discourage us. Keep it up!

  • harvard on Apr 2, 2009

Freedom of the press, speech, religion and OPINION. Use it or lose it. I agree: we don’t have to agree but we should have opinions. I’ve heard it said that “writers are dictators” but this is merely an opinion. Words do command a “power” and it’s our responsibility to see this is not abused but used (hopefully) in a way to help others and especially those who cannot help themselves. Animals fall into this last group. This topic can easily spawn much banter and serious chatter too. I think you’ve “opened a box” here! Words that provoke thought!

  • Tennessee Thompson on May 14, 2009

Good thoughts. My personal thoughts are that you wrote a good article. There are so many things that I could say to this article, but I will not put them down here. It truly had me thinking. Nicely done.
