Introduction:
The goal of my personal project, “Sprayscape Art” is to learn how to paint amazing pictures with nothing but spray paint, scraps of paper, and a paint knife. I have chosen to base my project out of the area of interaction Human Ingenuity because of the very creative origins of where this art form came from. It is just such a simple form of art that not many people would think outside of the box to create, let alone actually practice. I plan to achieve my goal of learning how to paint like this by practicing it myself, as well as watching other people paint, and to look up new and creative techniques that I can incorporate into my art.
Process:
1.) Take a piece of glossed (waterproofed) paper and lay it down on a flat surface.
2.) Select a variety of paints that you want to use to create any picture that you desire
3.) Begin painting on the pied of paper and layer the colors according to how you want the finished product to look.
4.) Once all colors are layered, smudge them with a crumpled piece of newspaper, or scrape them with a small paint knife to give the colors texture/shape.
5.) Place a stencil (an object with a hollow cavity below it) on top of the colors that you have just smudged.
6.) Repeat steps 3 – 5 if desired to create a more complex picture (optional)
7.) Begin painting around the stencil(s) that are still in place in order to give them a background.
8.) Once paint has had a few minutes to dry, remove stencils, and admire your work.
When making art with spray paint, the process is deceptively difficult once you truly get into it. At first glance, you think that all you have to do is put some paint on special paper, rub it around and call it good. However, in reality there is so much more to understand in order to create a truly amazing piece of art. The three major principals that you must observe when creating the art are colors, layering, and pressure. Each of these three components plays an integral role in the overall outcome of the finished product. Even if one of these steps in done incorrectly, you will wind up finding that you may not like what you have just painted. This can be a real downer when you felt so good about what you were doing, and then just being crushed by how you are actually doing it wrong.
