I am going to give a little news then my opinion on the topic of schools.

President Obama thinks students all around the Earth are getting better grades than Americans. So, he has come up with the idea the school day ahould be longer, shorter summer vacation, staying open later and accepting students into the school on the weekends so they stay out of trouble.

According to Education Secretary Arne Duncan the way we go to school today is based on the farming culture. A culture where kids had to help in the fields.  Today not enough students work on farms to justify this school calender.

I think this will give students more time to grasp complicated subjects. In my opinion we need shorter summer vacations, because kids forget their skills over summer and are expected to enter a class that built on skills they forgot over the summer. It also helps kids from hanging around the streets and falling into the wrong crowd and end up in trouble.

All in all, this is a good idea that I hhope he makes it a law.

I think he is wrong about this (our government has been saying much the same). Young people need balance in their lives, they should not spend every waking moment at school. They should have time to pursue their interests, enjoy their family and put something back into society. They have to learn to be independent and self motivated. School should be for learning not a means of containment to prevent social problems. I have two grown up children now at university and one teenager still at school. They have grown into balanced, thoughtful and responsible members of society.

I am undecided, It seems to me (and maybe I am wrong) that my younger grandchildren are not getting the education that my children did when they were in school. I dislike them not getting an education but neither do I want them to spend all their time in school. Maybe the teachers should give harder daily lessons. I don’t know the answer.
