All the space junk was sent up into space by us humans, but the chances of collisions are minuscule. I'm sure they were just taking precautions.

Naming space junk…Ha ha. All that junk up there is from all the rockets, satellites, and probes that we’ve sent up since the beginning of our Space Age: things that had to be jettisoned prior to re-entry into our atmosphere…things that ‘got away from us’ while building the space station…things that were broken off of satellites that were hit with meteors…etc., etc.
And this is just off the top of my head! Lol.
We’ve done such a good job of polluting the earth that it only stands to reason that now we’ll work on polluting someplace else.
Just like the stars in the sky, there has to be a lot of junk up there if they’re handing out names!!!
