continued… You don’t know what you don’t know |
It’s one of those nights again.
You know the one
– where the mind is restless, the body fidgety,
and there’s something that just needs to get out…
but you don’t know what.
The what is unknown at this time,
but I’m hoping by the time we’re done here
we’ll know what, and maybe even why.
A short while ago I told you about things
we don’t see about ourselves,
and I received some interesting feedback.
Though I loved knowing how you took what I said,
as well as what it evoked from within you;
it also gave me the suspicion that what I had wanted to convey
had slipped through the cracks. The serendipity of it all
is that now we’re both the better for it,
and I’m glad our mental paths seperated.
Remember when I said that you don’t know what you don’t know ?
Well, when I said that the motivation for it stemmed from
those things in Life that are detrimental to what it is we want.
The things we don’t see – that we don’t know
that keep us from where we want to go, have, etc.
I will agree that every experience adds
to the great sum of who we are.
In that there is the realization that we might be “less” than
ourselves had we chosen differently in our Walk of life.
With that in mind, I’ve also been given the impression
that if we somehow alter our normal way of being
and make concience decisions that seem to go against
“who we are” that it means we are not being true to ourselves
and that the beauty of who we are is tainted and distorted.
What I should have added to my original conversation
might sound something like this:
“If there are areas of our life in which
we are not completely satisfied and happy with,
then it would benefit us to make decisions that
would lead us toward greater fulfilment in those areas.
* IF that is really what you want.
(*there are always those who would rather defend a position
and/or justify past decisions and actions)”
So back to square one, with hopefully a different view;
There are things that we see and know hold us back
from achieving a more fulfilling Life.
What usually stands in the way of conquering these things
are the things THAT WE DON’T SEE.
It was the ice UNDER the water that sank the Titanic.
Realizing that there are things beneath the surface
that affect who we are, what we do, how we act, react…
That in itself may cast enough light to reveal
the shadow of what really holds us back.
Something else to keep in mind,
and I may have mentioned this before;
often other people can see those things
about us that we are blind to.
So humor me if you will,
and read my original post (below) again.
…and I’d be very curious to hear if anything shifted

——– previous original post below———
So I was walking down the aisle at Walmart,
and a rather attractive young lady looked at me,
smiled, and looked away.
Well, I thought that was pretty cool – a nice boost to my ego
Of course, I was wearing my lucky sweater.
* I’ve nicknamed it my lucky sweater because it is my favorite sweater, lightweight & incredibly comfortable. It is brown in color and those of you who know me or have met me I guarantee you have seen it by now UNLESS you met me on a hot day & haven’t seen me since. I will more than likely pass this sacred sweater down to my son when he is 18, who will be gracious in its acceptance and either tuck it away in his closet or donate it to Goodwill…
Meanwhile, back at the ranch… or in this case store.
A little while later, a couple of girls smiled at me & sort of giggled after I had passed. Flirtatious vixens – probably acting all kinds of silly when a handsome young lad as myself is near.
My, I was starting to feel like quite the stud.
Even some dude gave me the nod – like I was all kinds of cool.
On the way home I was feeling about 6′ 4″ and contemplating
when I would start booking my GQ photoshoot
and what agency to represent me.
Brace yourselves; everything is about to come crashing down.
I went into the bathroom after I got home, looked in the mirror and saw the huge stain of Baja sauce down the left side of my mouth… face.
(For those of you who need more background info on this – order a Baja Chalupa with extra Baja sauce from Taco Bell. A basic Baja Chalupa won?t cut it – extra sauce or you may as well forget it. Now, go eat it while driving…)
What I learned,
aside from remembering to wipe that delicious Baja sauce off my face:
(or should I say what I was reminded of)
There are things about us that we do not see – that we do not know.
STOP ! Savor that point.
Now, give me an example.
I’ll wait.
Make it a good one…
I’m patient.
Seriously – I can wait
Ya know,
even a small example would be OK…
So… I’m not trying to pressure you or anything,
but I would like to, you know – get to the point…
tonight
sometime…
I just need an example any example, OK ?
OOOoooookay then
– I’m just going to finish this up here while you’re thinking.
If you are still thinking & haven’t come up with an example,
that is exactly my point.
If you did manage to find an example – think again.
Tell me something about yourself that you do not know
something about yourself that you do not see.
You can’t, because you don’t know it’s there.
(Or as a very wealthy person once said -
“you don’t know what you don’t know”)
BUT JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN’T SEE IT
OR DON’T KNOW ABOUT IT
DOESN’T MEAN IT’S NOT THERE.
It doesn’t mean that it’s not having an effect on your Life
and on those around you. Quite the contrary
– all too often it’s the things that we are not aware of
that determine and dictate so much of what we do and don’t do.
So… with that in mind; What do you do ?
That’s what I want to know from YOU.
I want to come back to this – but first I want to hear YOUR input.
And just for example – if you happen to be reading this
and decide to either not contribute or plan on
“getting back to it later” I have a sneaking suspicion
that this reaction occurs in other areas of your Life as well.
Perfect.
I especially want to hear from you…
– please
