A crazy idea, but very rewarding.

No matter how wonderful our lives seem, there’s always that one little thing we need to change or better in some way… if I could just finish this one project, or change this one look, my life would be complete! What starts out as one little project often evolves into a major overhaul. That’s what happened to us.

My grandmother is recovering from a stroke, and went into a second set of intensive rehab while my grandfather did a bit of travelling. So my family decided we needed to repaint their bedroom – which was pepto bismal pink, complete with red carpet and a red and green painting! Well, push came to shove, and in the end we are completely remodeling their house!!! New flooring in about 75% of the house, new countertops in the ktichen, new vanities in the bathrooms, knocking down walls and putting others up, reorganizing everything they own (including furniture), etc, etc, etc… you know how it goes. And don’t worry, there’s plenty of painting to go around too! :) It has been a chaotic mess. And of course, it wouldn’t be complete without the ramp out front and the new landscaping! :) Of course, the family dog is loving running around outside while we work inside. She’s not too sure about all the new people roaming about, but she’ll give them a chance (especially if they have peanut butter treats!).

The bottom line is that there is a lot to do and a shortage of workers willing to help. But when a family pulls together, it’s amazing what can be accomplished in a few weeks. Of course, there are things we could and maybe should do, but need to leave alone for time and financial sake. It’s a lot of backbreaking work, and stressful times – but my grandparents are worth it!

The thought crosses my mind that this remodeling draws a parallel to our lives. We always seem to have one thing we want to change, and sometimes change is a wonderful thing. My grandparents are getting the house they deserve and need out of this! It’s a wonderful gift for us to give them. :) We just have to pick our battles. But once we decide something’s worth fighting for, if a family (or group of friends) can pull together and work hard, the results can be amazing and very rewarding. And, you just might make a few fun memories or closer bonds in the process.
