This essay is about what a role model should be.

There are people in this world who choose to become role models. For some, becoming a role model is a calling they answer early or later in life. Maybe a specific event happens in one’s life to change their outlook, or they simply want to become better people. Whatever the reason, role models are essential to our existence.

A role model is defined simply as one who cares, one who takes the lead, or one who teaches others. Role models have to display leadership in their daily activities. My mom is a huge role model in my life because she has successfully led me to an exciting time in my life that we call college. I have learned from her and followed her through my tribulations and have overcome difficult obstacles due to her advice and action. I hope she will always lead me down the right path.

A role model must also have an excellent work ethic. Like any good role model, he or she should work hard to achieve any kind of importance in life or to meet their goals. A role model who works hard has what it takes to succeed and knows there is no such thing as a free ride. One such person who I am proud to say obtains these characteristics is my dad. He has worked hard all of his life and never takes a day off. He has worked hard to provide for his family, and even does the little things that I take for granted. My dad has taught me that hard work will take you places you never thought you could go.

Lastly, a role model must accrue courage. What would happen if we didn’t have courageous people and we all became lost in the crowd? The world would become hellacious, plain and simple. Courage can be something one gains from life experience or being put in a difficult position. George Washington had to become quite brave after he was chosen to lead the Continental Army. Washington was fearful, and believed he could not do this task that he was called upon to accomplish. Through support and soul searching, George Washington led us to one of the greatest victories in American history, and to a rather important state of freedom. He could not have done what he did without courage.

There are many words you could use to describe a role model, but I believe leadership, a good work ethic, and courage top my list of what a true role model possesses. Another one of my personal role models is Reba McEntire. She displays all of these qualities plus scores of others. Reba has done exceptional work in her life and is living her dreams. I will always look to her when I need someone to follow, love me, or inspire me.
