A decade ago, precisely in 2000, the United Nations (UN) proclaimed the Millennium Declaration in New York, USA. A total of 189 countries agreed on the Millennium Declaration as an expression of concern globally to achieve the welfare of the community in various parts of the world.

Millennium Declaration that gave birth to the Millennium Development Goals (Millennium Development Goals – MDGs), which is covered in eight major goals. The eight goals are a unified intertwined with each other and focus on efforts to achieve human quality. Each goal translated into one or more targets with measurable indicators.

Millennium Development Goals in Indonesia were then used as a reference in the formulation of policies, strategies, and program development. The Indonesian government has mainstream MDGs in development since the stage of planning and budgeting to implementation. Achievement of the MDGs has been poured in the National Long Term Development Plan (RPJPN) 2005-2025, and the National Medium Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2005-2009 and 2010-2014. In addition, the achievement of the MDGs based on the strategy of pro-growth, pro-jobs, pro-poor and pro-environment.

The year 2010 is the momentum is very important for every country to make a commitment to the MDG global deal. Indonesia needs to work hard to continuously improve the welfare and quality of life of Indonesian people so that by itself the target of MDGs can be achieved in time. For that, the Indonesian government has set Roadmap Accelerating Achievement of MDGs (MDG Roadmap). This road map provides details about the present situation, challenges faced, as well as national development policies and strategies. Various strategic ideas must be implemented to accelerate the achievement of the MDGs targets.

Needed a better understanding of the challenges faced and the steps that must be implemented in order to achieve all the MDGs targets in Indonesia. Simultaneously, the Indonesian government continues to build an atmosphere that allows all components of society, civil society organizations, and private sector to participate productively in a community-based grass-roots movement for the benefit of the entire people of Indonesia.

Success in achieving the MDGs is highly dependent on the productive partnership of all components of society, and implementation of a comprehensive approach to achieve growth, improved public services, and community empowerment throughout the country.

Indonesia after the reform have an opportunity to build a strong foundation for Indonesia to return to the high economic growth and sustainable. Indonesia has managed to achieve several MDG targets. For example, in terms of poverty reduction, population earn less than $ 1 per day declined from 20.6% in 1990 to 5.9% in 2008. For several other MDG targets significant progress has been achieved, so that some MDG targets can be realized in 2015. Special attention should be given to several MDG targets, such as the decline in maternal mortality and several other targets such as numbers of HIV / AIDS by 2015, to those goals can be achieved.

Makin Importance of Private Sector Role

Apart from the government that plays a crucial role in efforts to accelerate achievement of the MDGs, it is now increasingly recognized that organizations outside the government structure, such as civil society organizations and the private sector, has an important contribution to efforts to accelerate achievement of the MDGs.

The role of the private sector in terms of three partnerships with governments and civil society is indispensable in contributing to the achievement of community welfare, which in turn play a role in encouraging efforts to accelerate achievement of the MDGs. The private sector also plays a central role because this sector has unique resources that can effectively complement the resources of government and civil society. By referring to the triangular strategic partnership, the private sector have a significant role in filling gaps (gaps) that still arise from government programs at the grassroots level.

To ensure an effective role of the private sector, the need to design-oriented cooperation in synergy and harmonization with civil society organizations in implementing programs in the field. Even so, it would be much better if companies start to think to design and mainstream CSR as a variable in the process of corporate business. Determination of focus areas that became the focus of the program, collaboration and partnerships are accountable, in addition to the sustainability of the program that aims to increase community capacity to increase the value of corporate CSR programs definitely will develop the ideas of CSR into sustainable programs (sustainable) . Education and increased knowledge is a handful of areas where companies can work together in synergy with the government, and civil society in preparing the program and its implementation.

Central Role of Nutrition in Achieving MDGs

One important target of MDG 1, which has shown significant progress is the prevalence of children under five are malnourished. The prevalence of malnourished children under five has been reduced almost by half, from 31% in 1989 to 18.4% in 2007. Target of 15.5% is expected to be achieved by 2015.

Focus on achievement of MDGs 1, which related to the prevalence of malnourished children under five are malnourished overcome them. Nutrition as the foundation for achieving other MDG targets need to get serious attention. Calculation of malnutrition is generally based on weight per height. However, the world in particular also take into account aspects of body height as an indication of the adequacy of nutrition, in which today’s reality shows that in terms of this nation Indonesia is still lagging. Height is calculated as stunted (growth inhibited) resulted in chronic malnutrition, beginning when the mother conceived. An understanding of nutrition, or, more broadly, education about nutrition, is an essential condition for achieving targeted towards nutritional adequacy.

Nutrition plays a central role in efforts to accelerate the achievement of MDGs in Indonesia, mainly because nutrition is the cornerstone toward achieving a healthy family. Adequate nutrients to prepare a solid foundation for the creation of healthy families. It is a fact that can not be denied that without adequate nutrition adequacy, various MDGs targets and welfare of the nation will be very difficult to achieve. Likewise, the absence of nutritional adequacy presupposes the existence of adequate food, some who have achieved the MDGs will be difficult to maintain optimal.

If we departed from the standpoint that there is interplay between the goals, then we can see that the efforts to accelerate reductions in malnutrition in mothers and children will also positively affect the achievement of the MDGs targets other. In this context, the decline in malnutrition rates in the mother and child will obviously contribute to the achievement of MDG 1 (poverty and hunger), MDG 4 (child mortality), MDG 5 (maternal mortality) and MDG 6 (malaria control, tuberculosis, and HIV / AIDS).

From the standpoint of the adequacy of nutrition in the family, attainment of the MDGs will also be easier if the members of the family is healthy family members. Furthermore, education of children will be better and the impact of malnutrition on child’s IQ will be reduced. Efforts to improve maternal and child health will also get a strong impetus through the adequacy of nutrition.

One crucial issue related to the adequacy of nutrition is food security. In a country rich in natural resources, such as Indonesia, one of the important issues that must be studied is how to prepare food reserve through the provision of dry food. With the availability of appropriate technology at this time, the effort to support food security through the provision of dry food is very possible.

Education about the importance of nutrition would be more easily directed to the families to live healthy, quality education for children in the family can be achieved. Therefore, the promotion of maternal and child health need encouragement and support.

Preferably at the upstream level is to think about solving the problem that started from health. Understanding of the nutritional or giving the right nutrients, especially those directed to pregnant women and children, should be prioritized. With family planning in a responsible manner and provide proper nutrition to children, the child’s intellectual ability is possible to reach optimal potential to receive various forms of knowledge. With children educated, well-being will be easier to grasp.

Today’s era is the era of high technology (high tech), which requires high touch (high touch) is also in public life. We can take advantage of this high technology to improve the understanding of nutrition for the wider community. Body weight and height according to the physical development of humans, because our country still suffered from chronic malnutrition if calculated from the number stunted. To achieve the target of nutritional adequacy, especially for mothers and children, a balanced diet should be well understood by every family.

Malnourished pregnant women will give birth to babies with low weight, will cause the failure of physical growth that leaves people little boys and little girls. The cycle will be repeated again and again, and attempt to break the cycle should begin with the existence of an adequate understanding of the effects of malnutrition.

Expected Role of Private Sector

So, what is needed for the private sector can generate an optimal impact of CSR programs at the grassroots level, such as programs related to improving the adequacy of nutrition and food security? The answer to this question can vary, but most of these programs must be visionary, well structured, and action-oriented. In its implementation, these programs also must be inclusive, with the vision to include the local community as well as stakeholders beneficiaries of those programs.

In addition, the private sector can work together with governments and civil society organizations to design and implement programs that reach broad national power. The progress of information and communication technology today is very possible to implement such a program. With about 75% of today’s mobile phone users in Indonesia, efforts to equip society, especially those at the grass roots, with educational information about health and nutrition, it is possible.

These efforts, in turn, will provide impetus for the programs other MDGs, and will lead to the acceleration of the achievement of the MDGs targets. Of course, realize all the ideas into concrete programs is not easy. However, at least, through a synergistic cooperation and complementarity between the various sectors, various efforts to accelerate achievement of the MDGs can further optimized
