My experience of Rotasia 2010, which is a yearly gathering of all the south-east Asian rotaractors!
First let me tell you something about Rotasia; Rotasia is a conference
of all rotaract members from South-East Asia. It includes clubs from India, Pakistan,
Sri-Lanka,Nepal, Bangladesh, etc. Rotasia was held recently in the historical city of
Aurangabad.
It was first Rotasia for all the members of my club, so we were all
pumped up and thrilled and to add more excitement, the event was taking place in our city!
As the countdown for the mega-event began, the tension started to
mount in local rotaract clubs. Each club was handed over a committee. There were four
committees in all- transportation, accommodation, organizing and food.
We got the food committee. At first we were very excited to get the food committee but the
excitement didn’t last long. We soon realized that our job was the toughest. We
had to take in mind the likes and dislikes of people from different countries,
backgrounds and we had to be prepared to handle some tough customers and at
times also hear their scolding with a smile on the face.
If this wasn’t enough, the strength of our committee started to
decrease. From a strong looking fifteen members with 10 days to go for the event; we
were cut short to just 5 members and only a day to go for the event. If I say we were
shattered, it would be an understatement! Because we were not only short on members but also
short on confidence. We were even thinking of giving up. We were waiting like
anything for this event and now as it was just round the corner; we
didn’t wanted it to come. Our dream had turned into a nightmare! But we didn’t give up.
We decided that if we are going to die we will not die wondering but die
fighting! Who knows the outcome might be different.
As they say, “You will never know until you try!” so we decided to
give it a go, a real go! We went to the venue a day before the event, to check how things were
spanning out. We had long discussions with the authorities and were quite happy
with the proceedings.
