Entrance application essay for the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor for the 2009-2010 school year.

University of Michigan Entrance Essay #2 2008

For as long as I can remember I have been interested in how things are put together and operate. I started looking into pursuing a future in engineering during my sophomore year.  I am now planning on majoring in either chemical or nuclear engineering.  Both of these fields are growing and becoming more and more important everyday.  Studying in either field would hopefully one day give me the opportunity to do something that could better the way we do things everyday.

Throughout my schooling I have always excelled in math and science.  I have always understood the concepts of math and liked having a definite right answer or wrong answer.  I like solving a hard equation or story problem and knowing I got the right answer, it gives me a great feeling of accomplishment.  English and art have always been a bit harder for me, because there is never a definite right or wrong answer when writing a paper or painting a picture.  In these fields the outcome is evaluated differently by each and every person.

Being an engineer allows a person to do hands on work with different things.  I like this concept because I hate doing work that really doesn’t accomplish anything and has no lasting effects.  Doing something like chemical or nuclear engineering would allow my work to have some outcome or lasting effect.

Being given the opportunity to study in Ann Arbor would allow me to get an education in a field I believe I would do well in and love.
