Is there really a Santa Claus, Father Time, St. Nicholas or Kris Kringle?

Is Santa coming to town? Do you believe? Were you naughty or nice? Are you awaiting with child like anticipation the arrival of this jolly old elf? These are the same questions we ask year in and year out. It is as if we all suffer from amnesia and need to use or hear these same old cliche’s all over again. Does it ever get old?

Nearly 40% of the United States has reported snow on the ground at this very moment and that should equate to smooth sailing for Santa. There is, however, a frenzied state of mind among Santa’s helpers. Will the gifts be there on time? Will everyone receive what they wanted? Will the funds be available or has Father Time’s budget been cut this year too? So many people are facing financial difficulties during this commercialized time of year. I can’t imagine the pain of a parent who is unable to provide their children with the presents they so eagerly wished for. Thankfully, there are still many who offer a giving hand and heart. The Salvation Army, Toys For Tots and numerous community organizations prevail in an attempt to give the children of the world a little ray of sunshine. After all, in the eyes of children, Santa is all powerful and magical and he definitely isn’t poor.

When my girls were small I met Santa and Mrs. Claus early enough to give them one present each to dole out on Christmas Eve. The expressions of innocence, glee, joy and excitement on their angelic faces were priceless. Mr. and Mrs. Claus even left sleigh tracks in the snow in front of our house. My daughters sure believed in Santa that year. Philanthropy abounds with good Samaritans donating money, food, clothes and coats, serving free meals or delivering meals to the needy. Aren’t they all St. Nicholas to some degree? Of course they are.

Family and loved ones are sowed all over, not unlike the floating seeds of a dandelion. On a personal note, we will celebrate early this year as our families perform a crazy juggling act, in a feverish attempt to see everyone important to them. It is a busy time, with some family living out of town and yet others traveling to different destinations. It’s the season of complete and utter chaos in a never ending effort to be Kris Kringle.

Someone recently explained to me the four (4) stages of life: 1. You believe in Santa Claus. 2. You don’t believe in Santa Claus. 3. You play Santa Claus.  4. You look like Santa Claus.

I believe in the spirit of this holiday season. There are many good people in the world and we certainly are more alike than different. By and large we love the children of the world and want nothing but the best for them. Whether you are a believer of Santa or look like Santa, if you have a good heart, a helping hand, time to volunteer, are forgiving and donate to charity….then by all means you are the real deal.

I know I believe in the goodness and positive energy of the season and I sincerely hope you do also. So, to all a goodnight and ho, ho, ho. May Santa Claus touch all of your hearts during this wondrous time.

A well written and observed article. We are having an unusually harsh winter the odds of it snowing xmas day are dropping dramatically. In my article ‘I was Father Christmas for Charity’ reveals my true feeling about xmas and what it should really be for, which is children and especially under priveliged kiddies. Seasons greetings to you too. LB

A fantastic well written piece. As I was reading it I could picture Santa in my mind. If you can do something to bring a smile to someone’s face then there is a Santa Claus. Thanks for sharing such a sweet article.

Well, I do believe. If there can be God, there can be anything in this world.

The real season is in your heart. Thanks for the wonderful article.

I LOVE this article! Some friends of ours have decided not to tell their children about Santa Clause b/c they want them to believe in Christ. My perspective is much like yours…Santa Claus is something more than just a man, it’s a concept, and for me the two fit very nicely together. Christ wasn’t acutally born on Christmas day, anyway..likely in the Spring time. Have you ever seen shepherds in the fields when it’s subzero weather out? You should check out my Triond article on Paying It Forward, think you will like! Hopefully it will be posted later today-just wrote.

Very enjoyable piece my friend – these days i think older children who are inbetween beliving and not beliving have the taste for expensive gifts, many though i think will be disappointed not because people dont care but money is tight for so many. Yes St nick lives in the food centres for the poor and homeless and even in the hospitals where complete stangers give of their time to visit the friendless. Long may they reign. – hark did i hear the jingle of bells in the distance???

I did hear that next year Santa will be sponsered by Nike, Toyota and Toll House, so he should have some extra cash.

I can be a real Santa this Christmas by sharing what little i have with other people.

  • nz2rdfox on Dec 15, 2010

santa is just a symbol of what Christmas should really be about..”GIVING” and that’s the reason why Christ was born..for us to do what God has done..He gave HIS son for us..:)

that’s why we celebrate the season in the first place..or is there any other reason that i know not of?..

    Great share :)

I like how this was presented. It invites us to go beyond the trappings and focus on what Chritmas is really all about. Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas. You may want to receive my online gift before Christmas, “One More Gift For All My Triond Friends.” It has an expiration date. lol.

I believe in Santa Claus, He is just inside the heart of those who truly care, give what they can share and love with all their hearts without expecting anything in return. Merry Christmas!!

Great writing, in your theory of the four stages of life, I think I am now close to number 4.

  • cyrenjan on Dec 16, 2010

It is something I would want my son to believe as I did when I was a child. :-)

A delightful article. I love your 4 stages of life. I wish you a very happy holiday season also Freethinking. Long live Santa Claus!

  • BC Doan on Dec 16, 2010

Santa Clause is an extraordinary concept that works well for richer people. But for poor people, it’s a nightmare trying to live up to that legend!

I’m glad there are many organizations that collect toys for kids, just to bring them some joy!

  • Frederick Dewar on Dec 16, 2010

It matters not, in my opinion, whether Santa is real or not; the meaning behind it is more important.

Oh and of course, Santa is real :)

  • Patricksia on Dec 16, 2010

God fills our heart with gladness,
Christmas season fills our home with joy,
The Spirit of Santa fills our heart with love,
Well then it will be jolly good if the stockings are filled up too.
What a lovely share this is.

  • Brewed Coffee on Dec 27, 2010

I guess I wasn’t a firm believer in Santa Claus even as a child. Well for one thing we don’t have snow in our country…and no chimneys as well…LOL! But I am a believer in the real meaning of the season and the celebrations…

  • Ukrainian on Jan 12, 2011

I love the paragraph about 4 stages of life. In Ukraine we have Grandfather Frost and the Snow Girl; I have written about them in my article
    http://socyberty.com/holidays/grandfather-frost-the-russian-brother-of-santa-claus/

So, I have gone through 3 first stages already: I believed in Grandfather Frost (Santa Claus), I didn’t believed in Grandfather Frost (Santa Claus) and I played the Snow Girl when my son believed in Santa Claus. :-)
There is no 4th stage for me bcz the Snow Gilr is always a girl. :-)
