Sitting down to write an article, which could be read by many, is more stressful than I’d first thought. I was beginning to wonder whether this was such a good idea, when a memory from the past hit me.

Best Laid Plans

I was about 7, playing with my best friend Jonathon. Jonathon and I had decided that, because our parker jackets were made out of the same material as a parachute, they would work just like a parachute. Q.E.D, or so it seemed to two seven year old boys. The next couple of hours were spent fixing the jackets together and fastening various bits of string and skipping rope to our persons. Fantastic, no adult could ever have the focus of a 7 year old boy, on a mission.

Vertical Hold

Needless to say, the enthusiasm waned a little once were sat on top of the wall looking down. Jonathon jumped – I didn’t. In my defence, I did quickly climb down to tell his mum that they would probably need to call an ambulance.

I often wonder how much of our lives and goals are set when we are young. Jonathon went on to travel the world, scuba diving and driving sports cars. I am a primary school teacher. I don’t regret my choices, and I do love my life. But looking back at the decisions we both made, sitting on the wall – one of us jumped, the other didn’t.

Ready to Jump?

I have decided that I shall write some more articles. At the age of 36 – I think at last I’m ready to jump.

Kudos to you for the courage to try something outside of your comfort zone. One of the mottoes I live by is, “I’ll try just about anything once.” That philosophy has taken me skydiving, earned my private pilot’s license, and moved me into a teaching career. So as one educator to another, congratulations on doing something new. Keep looking for the next adventure!

    Cheers Eric,
I’m definitely going with the ‘Try anything once’ attitude at the moment. This weekend, I’m going to try running (so long as it doesn’t rain … old habits die hard.)

What are you waiting for. I take it you have fat kids and your wife dresses like she came out of a fashion magazine.
