This is based on the poem search for my tongue from the anthology.

The poem search for my tongue has a very interesting background. The writer had moved to a different country and thinks she is forgetting her mothertongue. When she doesn’t think her mothertongue is there it regrows and she remembers most of it.

The main image in the poem is losing the tongue. The writer extends our view by stating that your tongue that would “Rot and die in your mouth until you spit it out”. This makes us feel that the tongue is infected and falls off. This extends our thoughts on “ I have lost my tongue”.

The main theme of the poem is the conflict between her languages. The Gujarati writing makes us feel like the reader is getting forced to speak the foreign language. This is in the centre of the poem to show its the centre of conflict and we should feel sorry for every person that has to denie their mothertongue for their foreign tongue. Another theme that we can see is the dream and the fact that she remembers everything in her dream. This shows us that you cant forget your mothertongue, just misplace it in your mind.

At the start of the poem the writer is talking in conversational language, talking directly to us. In the middle we can’t understand just as the writer can’t understand some of the language we speak. Also we hear about the dream and the writers view of the situation. At the end of the poem we read all about her opinions.

The poem is made to be positive as the writer explains how the tongue grows back with strong veins. This makes us think that the writer has purposely written that to show about how you can never lose your mothertongue, even if you forget it.

I think that the writer has done a good job to get her view across on us readers, making her pain reach our sorrow. This poem is very good because it has everything needed to affect the reader.
