Self reliance is a matchless virtue which saves us from many hazards on individual as well as national level. A man inspired with the spirit of self help depends entirely on his own resources. He does not look up to others for the solution of his problems. He has the determination to sink or swim all by himself. He believes in his own strength and is confident of his own power. One who denies self reliance is like a lame man who makes the use of a crutch for walking.

He cannot walk unless he has the crutch. Similarly a man who always seeks help is like a lame man who makes progress as long as others help him and comes to a stand still as soon as foreign help comes to a stop. This progress of man is not to his credit as it is ascribed to those who help him. There can be nothing more shameful and dishonorable than this. Self reliance enhances our power, encourages our designs and increases our hope and confidence.

A child who walks one step without help today will go a double pace tomorrow but if we make him habitual of our support, he will never gain confidence to stand erect and move forward independently. Self reliance on national level gives self respect and independence. Modern world presents the picture of both the independent and self reliant nations. Super powers try to keep the underdeveloped nations under their thumb. Poor countries are forced to seek help from the big powers who exploit their resources to their benefit. They do not allow them to stand with their heads erect as they are helpless in their hands. They are not free to make policies or to have relations with other countries unless permitted by big powers.

These big powers infiltrate into small nations through their loans, aids, subsidies and technical help. They laid down certain embargos and sanctions to ruin its economy. This situation has brought the importance of self reliance to lime light. He feels that all troubles are for poor whereas big guns remain unchanged. If examples are set to remove his tear, he will doubtlessly advance to strengthen those hands which are raised in favor of self reliance. However, time is ripe to decide now or never.
