An argumentive/opinion article about Canada and the United State’s justice system.
In North America, there are many criminals on the run for committing crimes. Most of them have previously committed many crimes. They should be locked up inside a prison, instead of roaming free and murdering people or robbing stores. The Justice System should keep criminals in jail for a very long time, so they will not commit further crimes. The system should not issue “community service” to criminals in replacement for jail time. The criminals do not learn anything from “community service”. Lastly, the youths that have committed crimes should serve the same sentence as any adult should.
Many of the crimes committed could have been prevented if the criminal was in jail at the time of the crime, because many criminals have previously committed crimes. They would not be able to do damage if they were in jail for a long time. This gives a sense of justice to people harmed by the criminal’s villainous acts. Also, long jail time sets an example to future criminals, discouraging them from committing crime in the future. The criminals should have thought of what they were doing before doing it. There is a famous saying called: “If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime”.
Criminals should not have a choice of community service as an alternative for prison. Many criminals do not learn anything while working for the community. They merely help the community sloppily to finish their sentence. When they are finished with their community service, they just return to their life of crime, which leads to destruction and chaos to the community. “Community service” sentence actually encourages other criminals to engage in criminal activities, because they would think that it is only community service, and it is no big deal. They should be taught a lesson and go to jail, which is the only way they can learn to repent.
Many criminals today are youths below the age of eighteen. Because they are underage, when they commit crimes, they do not receive the full sentence as an adult does. This is unfair, because many of the population who commit crimes are under 18. This also encourages other youths to commit crimes, because they will have juvenile a juvenile sentence. For example, a 20 year old who murders someone might get a life sentence, while a 17 year old who murders someone will get a five year sentence. The youths will learn nothing in their five years in prison. Many of the youth criminal offenders end up as mass criminals or drug dealers because they think it is not a big deal to go in prison. Lastly, the Justice System should not be biased against people with good lawyers, or celebrities. People should not get the “special treatment” just because of their popularity. An example would be the Rihanna/ Chris Brown incident, when Chris Brown assaulted Rihanna but only received six months of community service. Any other ordinary man might get two years in prison or more.
In conclusion, the Justice System has many flaws. They should hand out much longer jail sentences, ignore the “community service” alternative for jail, not give out juvenile sentences for criminals under the age of 18, and not be biased on celebrities or rich people. If the Justice System accepts these ideas, the society will be a much better place now.
